Tomato South Tan - orange fruit of extraordinary taste

The variety of tomato varieties can boggle your imagination. For gardeners looking to grow exotic looking crops, we recommend the Southern Tan tomato, which bears unusual orange fruit. In addition to the catchy appearance, this tomato has an original taste.

The history of growing tomato varieties South Tan

Tomato Southern Tan belongs to the yellow-fruited varieties. It was bred by the Novosibirsk breeder V.I. Dederko already more than 10 years ago. The exact origin of the variety is unknown, but according to some gardeners, one of the "parents" is the Golden Koenigsberg. Since 2007, the tomato has been included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation and approved for cultivation in all regions of Russia. Suitable for cultivation in open ground and greenhouses.

Now Southern Tan is grown both in Russia and in Ukraine and is appreciated for the good taste and unusual appearance of the fruit.

Description of tomatoes with an unusual color

Tall bushes of Southern Tan tomatoes are covered with an average amount of large, slightly drooping dark green leaves. Simple inflorescences are collected in a brush up to 5-7 pieces (most often 3-4 pieces).

Fruit clusters of Southern Tan often consist of three tomatoes

Forming fruits are attached to stalks that do not have articulations. Tomatoes have a cylindrical shape and, when fully ripe, acquire a bright orange color. The surface of the fruit is smooth, without ribbing. The size of tomatoes is quite large - the average weight is 200-211 g, the maximum is up to 350-380 g.

Most of the fruit is a fleshy, juicy and slightly oily pulp of medium density, inside which there are at least 4 seed chambers. The seeds are small.

Each tomato has 4-6 seed nests, but most of the mass is pulp

The taste of ripe fruits is very pleasant, sweet, with a fruity tinge. The variety gets excellent marks from experts. The pulp is high in vitamins and low in acids. Tomatoes of this variety are very useful for people suffering from anemia, anemia, obesity.

Characteristics of the Southern Tan variety

Southern tanning ripens in the middle (110–120 days pass from seed germination to the beginning of fruiting). The bushes grow without stopping (indeterminate) and can reach a height of 1.7 m in greenhouse conditions. In the open field, the growth of bushes is slightly more modest - 1.1–1.2 m.

Tomatoes Southern Tan are characterized by a number of advantages:

  • excellent marketability and taste;
  • large fruit sizes;
  • undemanding care;
  • resistance to most major tomato diseases;
  • fairly high yields (up to 8 kg / m2 in open ground, up to 13.8 kg / m2 - in greenhouses);
  • high content of vitamins in fruits.

The disadvantages of the variety include a tendency to attack by top rot and a decrease in yield under adverse weather conditions.

Although Southern Tan is bred in Siberia, it loves warmth and brings the greatest yields in the greenhouse. In the open field, more than 4 kg of fruit cannot be harvested from one bush.

How to Grow Tomato Southern Tan

For the cultivation of South Tan tomato, seedlings must be prepared (in the southern regions - Crimea, Krasnodar - you can sow directly into open ground).

Good seedlings - rich harvest

The seeds can be purchased or independently extracted from ripe fruits. Before planting, the seed must be processed:

  • check for fullness (put in water for 20 minutes and discard all seeds that have floated to the surface);
  • pickle with potassium permanganate, Fitosporin, Trichodermin or Baktofit;
  • a day before sowing, soak in a growth stimulator. You can use ready-made preparations (Epin, Zircon) or folk remedies (diluted 1: 1 aloe juice, frozen potato juice, a honey solution of 1 teaspoon of honey and 150 ml of cold water).

If you have purchased seeds in a nutritious shell, they do not need to be processed!

To accelerate growth, seeds can be germinated in a wet cloth before planting (keeping them warm for 2 days). Germination is usually necessary for old seeds (collected 3-4 years ago).

Sowing seeds for seedlings

Seeds should be sown for seedlings in late February - early March. Any capacity is suitable - a container, a shallow box, or you can immediately put them in separate cups or peat tablets (then you don't have to dive the seedlings). The prepared dishes are filled with loose nutrient soil (a purchased one or a mixture of garden soil with humus is suitable). For the prevention of diseases, the soil must be disinfected - warm it up for 15–20 minutes in the oven or spill it with hot potassium permanganate diluted to a dark pink color.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Seeds are sown in moist soil to a depth of 1–1.5 cm in lines with an interval of 2–3 cm. When sowing, 2-3 seeds are planted in individual containers, so that later only the strongest plant is left.
  2. The seeded containers are covered with a sheet of glass or polyethylene and placed in a shaded warm (22-25 aboutC) place before germination.
  3. As a rule, the seeds germinate after 6-7 days, after which the film is immediately removed and the seedlings are moved to a well-lit room.

Seeds are sown in a well-moistened substrate

For normal development during the first week, tomatoes require a temperature during the day 15-16 aboutC, then 20-24 aboutC, and at night - 12-14 aboutFROM.

Tomato seedlings need lighting very much, with a lack of light, the plants stretch and become weak and thin... The duration of daylight hours should be 10-12 hours.

Seedling care

Water the seedlings only with warm water using a spray bottle... Until 5 true leaves appear on the seedlings, it is enough to water once a week, and then every 3-4 days.

You need to feed the seedlings only when the plants look weak and the leaves are not bright enough. In such cases, complex preparations, for example, Agricola or Kornerost (1 teaspoon per liter of water), will help restore the health of the seedlings.

Agricola's solution is poured over tomato seedlings at the root

After the appearance of the second true leaflet (approximately 7–8 days after germination), young plants dive into separate pots at least 10 cm deep.

Planting seedlings in a permanent place

The recommended age for transplanting South Tanning seedlings is 50–60 days. By this time, the plants have reached 30 cm in height and have 6–7 true leaves.

The soil for Southern Tan tomatoes should be loose and moderately nutritious. On too rich soil, the plants will fatten, therefore, when preparing the soil (in the fall), you should not get carried away with the introduction of manure and other organic fertilizers.

Crop rotation is very important for plant health: you cannot plant tomatoes after nightshade crops. The predecessors can be pumpkin, garlic, herbs, onions.

Young tomatoes are planted (if possible with an earthen lump) in moistened holes in a checkerboard pattern with an interval of 50-60 cm (about 3 bushes per 1 m2). When the plantings are thickened, not only is it difficult to care for the plants, but their yield is almost halved.

If you do not thicken the planting of tomatoes, the yield will be higher.

Tomatoes Southern tan in the garden - how to care

Southern tanning does not need special care - like other tomatoes, it needs watering, bush formation, feeding and protection from pests. These procedures must be performed regularly, otherwise the yield of plants will decrease.

Irrigation schedule

Tomato bushes begin to water 7-8 days after planting at the rate of 3-4 liters of water per 1 plant. Before flowering, watering should be moderate and carried out only when the soil dries up. From the beginning of flowering, you need to water every 3-4 days. If tomatoes are grown outdoors, the frequency of watering should be adjusted according to rainfall.

Water for irrigation must first be defended and applied strictly under the root in the early morning or evening hours.

Warm water should be served strictly under the root of the tomatoes, without wetting the leaves.

When the watered soil dries up slightly, you need to loosen and weed out the weeds. As soon as the bushes begin to form additional roots (white tubercles appear in the lower part of the stem), hilling is carried out.

My experience with growing tomatoes South Tan has confirmed that this variety has an unusual and very good taste, the pulp is firm - really "meat". But it does not bear very much fruit. One feature is noticed - the seedlings, as a rule, are thin and frail in appearance. Do not be afraid - when transplanted into a greenhouse, the plants quickly get stronger and grow well. Top rot appears regularly, although the bushes are slightly leafy. To reduce this phenomenon, feeding with calcium helps (the tomato reacts very strongly to calcium deficiency). Therefore, when digging the earth, dolomite flour should be added, and if this is not enough, spray the plantings with a solution of calcium nitrate (100 g per bucket of water). By the way, such treatments scare away slugs and ticks.

Top dressing scheme

You need to feed the Southern tan in the same way as other varieties of tomatoes - 3-4 times during the summer:

  • the first feeding is required 15–20 days after planting the seedlings in a permanent place. During this period, you can give nitrogen-containing fertilizers, for example, an infusion of bird droppings (1:20) or manure (diluted with water 1:10);
  • the next feeding is carried out during flowering. It is recommended to use a complex fertilizer, as well as spraying with a boric acid solution (4 g per bucket of water), which prevents buds from falling off;
  • at the beginning of ovary formation, it is recommended to water the soil under the bushes with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers (for example, 40–50 g of a mixture of potassium sulfate and superphosphate per bucket of water);
  • you can feed the bushes in the same way at the beginning of fruiting. As a fertilizer, an infusion of ash is used (for a bucket of water, 1.5 cups of sifted ash, leave for a day).

    Ash contains a lot of potassium, which tomatoes need to increase yields.

Grasshopping bush

Tomato bushes South Tan are very large and are characterized by active growth of green mass. To reduce thickening and improve set formation, pinching is required - pinching of lateral shoots. It is carried out by hand weekly (stepchildren should not reach a length of 5 cm). Bushes form into 1 or 2 stems.

What affects the Southern tan

Of all the various diseases, the Southern tan variety is usually affected only by the top rot. This disease is non-infectious, it develops due to a lack of nutrients (calcium, manganese, phosphorus, boron) and improper watering.

Top rot affects tomatoes Southern tan due to lack of trace elements

Disease prevention is the treatment with mineral fertilizers.

Among pests, especially in the greenhouse, Southern Tan can be affected by aphids, whiteflies and spider mites. Tomatoes can be saved from them with the help of treatments with Fitoverm, Aktellik or Aktara.

Long-awaited harvest

Southern Tan starts producing the first tomatoes in mid-July, and then fruiting continues until the end of August. The fruits tolerate transportation well and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Thanks to their tasty and dense pulp, tomatoes of this variety are perfect for making salads. You can also use them for making sauces, juice, mashed potatoes, soups and home preservation.

Reviews of gardeners

Tomato Southern Tan is not too difficult to grow. It does not have a particularly high yield, but it compensates for this disadvantage with a very good taste and bright sunny color of the fruit. Ornate bushes with orange tomato "bulbs" can decorate your site.

Characteristics and description of the Konigsberg tomato - reviews and photos of the variety, yield of varieties, cultivation features

Königsberg is a popular heart-shaped tomato. It was bred by Siberian breeders for cultivation in various climatic zones. According to the description of the variety, photos and reviews, the Konigsberg tomato has several varieties: gold, heart-shaped, pink new and striped. Let us consider in detail the main characteristics of the variety, the features of cultivation and care.

Varietal characteristics of tomato Southern tan

The Southern Tan tomato variety owes its birth to the Siberian breeders V.N. Dederko and O.V. Postnikova. Back in 2007, this variety was registered in the Federal Register and approved for use in all regions of Russia, both for growing in greenhouses and in the open field.

Tomato bushes Southern tan are indeterminate, so they need to be pinned and shaped. The bushes of this tomato do not grow too high, according to gardeners, in the open field their height does not exceed 100-120 cm.But they require a garter, because the bushes look sickly and are not able to hold the crop that has time to ripen on them.

In the greenhouse, the height of the plants reaches 1.7 meters.

The leaves are large, dark green in color, they look like they are constantly drooping, but this is a feature of the variety that should not be embarrassing.

The inflorescences are simple, the tomatoes ripen in medium-sized clusters. In each of them, from 5 to 7 tomatoes are tied.

The fruit looks like a large orange plum, with a coral shade on the sides. Tomatoes are quite dense, but not firm. The peel is strong, the pulp is juicy, oily, reminiscent of some exotic fruit. There are few seeds inside the tomatoes and they are small in size.

By the size of the cream of a tomato, Southern Tan grows quite weighty - some tomatoes reach 400 grams. On average, the weight of the fetus is 200-250 grams.

The taste of tomatoes Southern tanning is appreciated by many gardeners very well. Many who planted this variety are ready to accept its shortcomings just because the tomatoes are sweet and tasty.

Of course, the fruits are used primarily in salads. But the beauty and convenient size of the fruits allows us to make preparations for the winter, stunning in taste and beauty.

Prevention of diseases and pests

Reviews of experienced gardeners indicate that the Southern Tan tomato variety exhibits increased resistance to major diseases and pests. However, due to a lack of manganese or phosphorus, as well as when planting in soil with high humidity and acidity, plants can be affected by apical rot. This disease manifests itself in the form of a brown speck, which eventually spreads to the entire fetus. An effective method of combating the disease and its prevention is spraying plantings with calcium-containing preparations and boron. Affected fruits should be removed immediately.

Southern Tan tomatoes can be a treat for the following pests:

  • Chafer
  • whitefly
  • scoop
  • bear
  • spider mite.

To avoid their appearance on the site, tomatoes are treated with insecticidal preparations: Strela, Fitoverm or Aktellik.

If you have grown Königsberg golden tomatoes, please write whether you like them or not. What was the yield and taste of the fruit in your climatic conditions? How do you rate the disease resistance of this tomato? If possible, attach a photo of the entire bush as a whole or individual fruits grown by you to the comment. Thank you!

Your reviews and additions to the description will help many gardeners evaluate this variety objectively and decide whether to plant it or not.

For beds and shelters

Another important criterion is the conditions for growing tomatoes, in greenhouses or on open beds. Universal varieties have been bred, their gardeners are cultivated based on their capabilities: there is no greenhouse - they are planted in the beds, there are shelters - they are sent to protected ground.

For open ground, the best varieties of tomatoes: Uvalen, Penguin, Azhur, Kukla, Shuttle, Peter the First, Snow Leopard, Kibits, Raspberry Viscount.

Usually such tomatoes are not tall, unpretentious and yield early.

Indeterminate tomatoes are defined in greenhouses, giving large yields, but requiring attention and care. It is recommended to grow them on trellises, it is imperative to carry out the formation of bushes, pinching. It is important to take into account the characteristics of the variety, otherwise even the most productive tomatoes will not be able to please you.

Greenhouse varieties of tomatoes, reviews of which are only positive: Russian Empire, Babushkina Joy, Apple Minusinsk, Fidelio, Citrus Garden, One Hundred Pounds, Buffalo Heart, Puzata Khata, Niagara.

When choosing varieties for yourself, do not forget that the yield and taste depend on care. The review presents a large number of types of tomatoes, your task is to determine which tomato seeds are suitable for you according to various characteristics, and then - to provide the plants with comfortable conditions. We believe that you will succeed!
