So much has been written about English gardening that even someone who has never been to the UK can imagine a classic English garden quite clearly: an impeccable lawn, colorful mixborders, neatly trimmed shrubs, the beauty of a landscape style.
It would never occur to anyone to imagine vegetable beds in this landscape perfection; for gardening enthusiasts, the charm of the English style lies primarily in its decorativeness. Did you know that the British are not only keen gardeners, but also avid gardeners?
The gardening tradition in England dates back centuries. This activity reached a record peak during the Second World War, when vegetable gardens became an essential part of the country's food supply program. One of them was even defeated at Buckingham Palace - an unprecedented event in the centuries-old history of English gardening!
After the war, a construction boom began in the country, the government sought to provide housing for as many families as possible. Basically, these were semi-detached houses (literally "semi-detached"), designed for two families and divided by a capital wall into two autonomous parts, each with its own separate entrance. In addition to this "half house", a plot of land for a vegetable garden was attached - quite a reasonable measure in the period of limited rations and ration cards, a natural continuation of the tradition, born during the war years, of supplementing the family ration with vegetables from their own beds.
Residents of apartment buildings and densely built-up neighborhoods, however, found themselves outside of this project, because it was impossible for them to set up a vegetable garden in the immediate vicinity of housing. In 1950, Parliament passed the Land Allotments Act, which obliged municipal authorities to provide taxpayers with land for vegetable gardens. This is how the English gardening societies (aka "cooperatives") were born. But if in our country such sites are located in a suburban area, then in England they can often be seen in the city itself. Including in London, where they have become as commonplace as ornamental gardens.
Even the queen again started a small vegetable garden with an area of about 35 square meters in the garden at Buckingham Palace. Among the crops in its beds there are many species with "royal" names - how could it be otherwise? These are rare varieties of Blue Queen and Royal Red beans, Northern Queen lettuce, Golden Queen, Queen of Hearts and White Queen tomatoes.
The number of vegetable beds in the capital is constantly growing. The mayor of the city, by a special decree, ordered the allocation of land plots for growing vegetables wherever possible, even in central parks and near famous historical sites. Not so long ago, I went to London to visit my daughter, and on the way home, we grabbed several bunches of fresh spices from a small vegetable garden set up by the residents of the quarter right at the exit from the metro station - have you seen this in Moscow?
This tiny vegetable garden is five years old and is one of the first so-called "propaganda gardens" in London, designed to attract residents of the capital to gardening and prove to them that growing vegetables in the city is a real and extremely beneficial undertaking. The London initiative was so successful that it was immediately taken up by other cities in Britain and even foreign countries, and now propaganda gardens can be found on every continent.
Let us return, however, to the English horticultural cooperatives. Today the demand for land plots (in English "allotments") has reached a truly unprecedented level in the country. A couple of years ago, I decided to check how quickly it was possible to get a land plot for rent and called our County Council. Having told me my desire to start a garden, I asked how soon it could come true. It turned out that due to the huge number of applications, this requires “standing in line” for at least two years. This is not bad at all, my friend in London has been waiting for her garden for three and a half years!
English vegetable gardens are measured in "poles" (an old measure of measurement about 5 meters long). As a rule, the size of a typical vegetable garden does not exceed 10 square poles (250 square meters), and the maximum allowable plot size is 40 square meters, or 10 acres. The amount of rent varies depending on the geographic area and the size of the plot, but the average is between 50 and 100 pounds sterling per year. Pensioners receive generous discounts, usually 50%.
A typical urban horticultural cooperative is a collection of unfenced land parcels separated from one another by paths. Of course, no one forbids gardeners to enclose their garden with a hedge, but in this case it should be low and at least half a meter away from the path. But for the most part, garden plots are not fenced off. Often, their owners plant low vegetable borders around the perimeter of their possessions.
In addition to vegetable beds, fruit trees and shrubs, on each site you can also see a small shed for storing equipment, a greenhouse and a composter.
In addition, each gardening society certainly has something like an extensive communal shed, intended for the use of all members of the cooperative. It displays the necessary and useful information, stores stocks of fertilizers purchased at wholesale prices, a first aid kit and (no less obligatory!) An electric stove, because for the British tea drinking is an unshakable ritual that accompanies them throughout the day. But, most importantly, these buildings are a kind of communication center, a place where you can relax and talk with those who share their favorite pastime.
