Harvest juicy cauliflower from seeds: easy and fast!

Cauliflower is a fairly popular vegetable crop that can be grown both in greenhouse conditions and by direct sowing in open ground. Regardless of the method chosen, one of the important points of success in the cultivation of this variety of cabbage is the correct preparation of the seeds and their sowing. Following step-by-step recommendations, growing cauliflower will not be difficult even for a novice gardener.

Selection and preparation of cauliflower beds

The choice of a site and the preparation of beds for planting and growing cauliflower should be done in the fall. For this kind of cruciferous culture, a sunny and warm place in the garden is selected, since a large number of leaves will grow in the shade, and the ovary as such will not form.

Dense, heavy, and clayey soils with high acidity are not suitable for cauliflower. The optimum pH for the culture is 6.5–7.5. You can check the acidity with a special device or with indicator strips. If the soil is acidic, you will have to add lime or dolomite flour to deoxidize it. Most often, lime is used at the rate of 250–600 g per 1 m² (depending on the degree of acidity).

On acidic soils, cabbage is more susceptible to diseases such as keela.

To properly prepare the soil for planting cauliflower, you need to know its acidity.

In addition to regulating the acidity of the soil, attention is paid to the application of fertilizers, thanks to which it is possible to improve the composition of the soil. All types of cabbage love organic matter and cauliflower is no exception. Therefore, during the preparation of the beds, humus or compost is introduced. The amount of fertilization depends on the condition of the soil, its type and fertility. To ensure normal water and air exchange, add 1-3 buckets of organic matter per 1 m².

Cauliflower responds well to organic fertilizers, so compost or humus is added when preparing the site

Young shoots of cauliflower are quite sensitive to the lack of basic nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium). Therefore, in the fall, together with organic matter, the soil can be filled with nitrophos (2 tablespoons per 1 m²), and in the spring, before planting, add Kemira (60–70 g per 1 m²).

You should not make too wide beds for the culture, as this can lead to an excess of moisture, but at the same time, due to narrow beds, it may be lacking. The optimal width is 1 m.

Seed preparation

To improve the germination and germination of seeds, they must be treated before sowing. For this, a number of procedures are performed, which we will dwell on in more detail.

Calibration

First of all, the seed is calibrated: the seeds are placed in a saline solution (3%) and incubated for about 5 minutes. As a result, the lighter grains remain on the surface, while the heavier ones sink to the bottom. It is the settled seeds that are suitable for sowing.

To select quality seeds for planting, you need to calibrate in 3% saline solution

After the solution, the seeds are washed in water and dried a little to prevent premature germination.

It is recommended to leave only large seeds for planting, but you can use medium ones.

Germination test

In order to assess how high-quality seed will be used, it is necessary to perform a germination test:

  1. Seeds are placed in a damp cloth (gauze) in the amount of 100 pieces to make it easier to calculate the percentage of germination.
  2. Germination takes place at a temperature of + 20–25 ˚С. At the same time, they constantly check that the fabric is wet.
  3. Seeds are inspected daily, sprouted are counted and removed.

Those seeds that sprouted during the first three days determine the germination energy and how friendly the seedlings will be. Seeds that germinate within a week indicate germination in general.

To determine the germination of seeds, they are first soaked, and then the sprouted

Disinfection

In the next step, the cauliflower seeds are prepared for sowing. In order to prevent the development of fungal and bacterial diseases, the seed is treated in a 1–2% solution of potassium permanganate for 20 minutes, and then washed in clean water.

Despite the fact that disinfection in this way is the most common, the best effect can be obtained with heat treatment. In this case, the inoculum is placed in a gauze or cloth bag and placed in water at a temperature of + 48–50 ˚С for 20 minutes. The indicated temperature values should not be exceeded, since the seeds will lose their germination, and at lower rates, there will be practically no result from such treatment.

To disinfect the seeds of cauliflower, they are treated in a manganese solution

Germination acceleration

To accelerate the germination of the seeds of the culture in question, they are soaked in water at room temperature and placed in a heat, where they are kept for 12 hours. In this case, the water is changed every 4 hours. The water level should be such that the seeds do not float, but only become covered by it. The main purpose of the procedure is for the grains to swell. If sowing is carried out later, then, wrapped in a damp cloth, they are placed in the refrigerator on the lower shelf.

To accelerate germination, the seeds are soaked until they swell, and then placed in the refrigerator.

It is quite common to soak seeds in an infusion of wood ash, for the preparation of which 2 tablespoons of ash are poured into 1 liter of warm water and insisted for a day, and filtered before use. The seeds are placed in such a nutrient solution for 3 hours, after which they are washed in clean water.

Seed hardening

The final stage of seed preparation for sowing is hardening. After soaking, the seed is placed on the lower shelf of the refrigerator for a day. The temperature should be + 1–2 ˚С. This increases the resistance of plants to low temperatures and promotes better germination. At the end of the hardening process, the seeds are slightly dried, and then they begin to sow.

How to get cauliflower seeds

If you grow cauliflower every year on your site, then buying seeds is not necessary, because you can prepare them yourself. The cultivation of cabbage for the purpose of obtaining planting material is different from conventional cultivation. It is carried out in this way:

  1. From plants planted with seeds or seedlings, the strongest are chosen: they are called mother plants.
  2. The selected plantations are fed with complex fertilizers, loosened, watered, and hilled.
  3. In order to speed up the flowering process, the leaves are folded back and fixed in such a position that will provide better access of light to the inflorescences.
  4. When the cabbage head becomes less dense, the central part is removed and well-developed lateral shoots are left. Their number should not be more than five.
  5. Then the cut is sprinkled with ash, which will prevent decay.
  6. After about a month, the mother plants turn into testes, that is, when the culture is actively blooming. At this time, the cabbage is watered abundantly.
  7. During the period of the appearance of the first flowers, top dressing is carried out with superphosphate and hilling is performed.
  8. At the end of flowering, the tops of the shoots are pinched to form a better quality seed.
  9. To accelerate ripening, the root system of plants is pruned with a shovel or slightly raised with a pitchfork, prying on the plant itself so that small roots break off.
  10. At this time, watering is completely stopped.
  11. The seeds are harvested after they ripen, which can be judged by yellowed leaves and stems, as well as dried pods. To do this, they are cut off with whole branches, spreading a film under the plants.

After flowering, the cauliflower produces seeds that are harvested after ripening

Planting seeds in the ground

The main method of growing cauliflower is seedling, but the culture can also be obtained by direct sowing in open ground. This method has several advantages, since the plants are more resistant to dry and hot weather due to the formation of a strong root. (When transplanting seedlings, the root system is, at least slightly, but still damaged.) In addition, when cabbage is sown directly on the site and in due time, development occurs without any delay. To plant a crop by seed, you must adhere to certain rules and follow the recommendations.

When to sow cauliflower: timing

The timing of planting cauliflower seeds in unprotected soil depends on the growing region and variety (from late March to early May), as well as climatic conditions. The considered culture, in contrast to the head varieties, is less resistant to cold weather. Seeds hatch at a temperature of + 6˚C, and the warmer the environment, the faster the seedlings will appear.

Even at the beginning of June, there is a possibility of recurrent frosts, so the bed is covered with a film after sowing the seeds.

Landing patterns

The best way to grow cauliflower is to ensure that your plants get enough light and nourishment. The location of seedlings relative to each other directly depends on the varieties used. If early cabbage heads are small in size and plantings can be arranged according to a 40 × 50 cm scheme, then for late varieties with large heads - 60 × 70 cm.

When planting cauliflower of early varieties, they resort to the 40 × 50 cm scheme, for late varieties - 60 × 70 cm

Sowing seeds

Sowing cauliflower seeds is performed in the following sequence:

  1. In the prepared area, grooves are made to a depth of 1 cm with a distance of 40 cm from each other.

In a previously prepared area, grooves are made for cauliflower seeds to a depth of 1 cm with a distance of 40 cm from each other

  2. Spill the soil with warm water.

Before sowing cauliflower seeds, spill the soil with warm water

  3. The prepared seed material is laid out with an interval of 5 cm, after which it is covered with soil and slightly compacted.

Cauliflower seeds are sown at 5 cm intervals, then sprinkled with soil and lightly tamped

  4. For protection purposes, a film is used, which is stretched over the bed using a frame made of arcs.

To protect cauliflower crops from recurrent frosts, a frame is installed and a film is stretched

Seeds can also be sown in individual holes. For this, 2-3 seeds are placed in each hole in compliance with the planting scheme. After the development of seedlings, up to 3-4 true leaves are left the strongest sprout, and the rest are plucked out.

Planting seeds in a greenhouse

For cultivation of cauliflower in greenhouse conditions, the soil is prepared in the same way as for open ground, that is, organic matter and minerals are introduced, acidity is taken into account and crop rotation is observed. Indoors, seeds of early and mid-season cauliflower are sown immediately after the snow melts, since the soil in the greenhouse and greenhouse warms up much faster. The room temperature must be at least + 15–18 ˚С.

Sowing of prepared seeds is performed to a depth of no more than 5 mm. With deeper seeding, seedlings will appear much later. After planting, the soil is mulched with dry sand and watered abundantly with warm water. After 10 days, the seedlings are dived. When transplanting plants, holes are made according to the scheme 70 × 30 cm. A handful of humus, wood ash and complex fertilizer (for example, Kemira) are introduced into the planting hole.

Growing cauliflower in a greenhouse is easier than growing outdoors because an optimal climate for plants can be created and maintained.

Growing cauliflower indoors is much more convenient than growing unprotected because it is easier for plants to create the necessary conditions

Further, they provide the care that is necessary for this culture. The main thing is to monitor the air temperature, which should not exceed + 16-18 ˚С, and humidity - within 70-80%. If these conditions are not met, the head of cabbage will become loose and begin to crumble.

Features and timing of planting cauliflower seeds in different regions

Cauliflower can be cultivated in different regions of Russia, but at the same time it is necessary to take into account the climatic features of each of them and understand that sowing with seeds in open ground is best suited for the southern regions of the country. If we consider the Moscow region as an example, then here the heat comes in early May, and in Siberia and the Urals it should be expected no earlier than June 10. Accordingly, the sowing time depends on this. In Siberia, cauliflower is grown only of early varieties, since others simply do not have time to ripen before the cold weather, and only through seedlings. As for the timing of planting cauliflower for seedlings in Siberia and the Urals, they fall on April 10-15.

Suitable varieties include:

  • Baldo,
  • Opal,
  • Movir-74,
  • Snowball.

Cauliflower varieties for the Moscow region and central Russia should be characterized by resistance to sudden changes in temperature and humidity, be undemanding to light and heat, and also ripen no later than mid-October. You can plant cauliflower with seeds in these regions from mid-March (in the greenhouse) to mid-May (in the ground) at intervals of 10–20 days. Suitable for cultivation are such varieties as:

  • Early ripening,
  • Gribovskaya early,
  • Guarantee.

In the south of the country (Rostov Region, Krasnodar Territory), planting seeds in open ground is possible in early March. Since cauliflower does not like extreme heat, after the emergence of seedlings, they are shaded, subsequently watered abundantly as the soil dries. The following varieties are considered suitable:

  • Adler winter 679,
  • Adler spring,
  • Sochinskaya.

Plant compatibility of cauliflower with other crops

To make the cauliflower feel comfortable on the site, you should adhere to the recommendations for the compatibility of this culture with other garden plants. The most favorable neighbors for cauliflower are:

  • beans,
  • beet,
  • celery,
  • cucumbers,
  • sage,
  • thyme.

But it is better to avoid the neighborhood with the following plants:

  • broccoli,
  • cabbage,
  • Strawberry,
  • tomatoes.

To protect cabbage from pests, you can plant such aromatic plants as marigolds, marigolds, wormwood, mint, chamomile in the immediate vicinity of the garden. Planting dill near the cabbage will have a positive effect on its taste.

Marigolds will not only decorate the cauliflower garden, but also scare away its pests.

It is not possible to plant cauliflower with seeds in a garden bed in all regions of our country. But if you choose the right varieties, taking into account the ripening time, take into account the peculiarities and observe the agricultural technology of cultivating a crop, you can get a good harvest of a useful vegetable.

Cabbage is a popular vegetable plant: it is grown not only by private owners, but also by large agricultural enterprises, and on an industrial scale.
To get a good harvest of cabbage, you must first grow seedlings, and then transplant them to the garden. And in order for the seedlings to turn out strong and healthy, you need to have special knowledge, which we will be happy to share with you.

From the article on our website you can find out:

  • when is the best time to sow cabbage seeds for seedlings
  • how to prepare for sowing seeds
  • how to sow correctly
  • how to care for cabbage seedlings
  • when to transplant seedlings into the garden.

Cabbage is one of the most important garden crops, which is grown in seedlings in many regions. The crop yield, which, without exaggeration, will feed you all year, depends on how correctly the timing of planting cabbage for seedlings was chosen and what was the care of the seedlings before planting them in the garden. We will tell you when to sow cabbage for seedlings, how to grow cabbage seedlings at home and when to plant them in the garden.

The technique of caring for cauliflower is not fundamentally different from growing white cabbage seedlings. There are some peculiarities of growing:

  • Cauliflower has a poorly developed root system. Therefore, in containers in which seedlings are grown, 6 days before planting, the earth must be cut into squares so that the plant forms a branched root system
  • It is recommended to plant seedlings in individual containers.

Important! If you plan to plant seedlings earlier in open ground, then the seedlings should be older.

Reviews of gardeners

Cauliflower has almost never been a problem. We have been working on it on an industrial scale for a couple of years. In early spring, seedlings of two varieties were planted - Alpha and Snezhniy ball. And then, after the predecessor left the land, a late-ripening variety - Yako was planted. Maybe other varieties are already relevant, a couple of years have passed.

Hello! I have been growing cauliflower for several years now. The main secret to getting a large head is the air temperature! Above 30 degrees, the heads develop poorly and therefore are small! I recommend that you try to grow early varieties of cabbage, you will harvest in June, there is still no heat as such. And don't forget about abundant watering.

Last year I planted Kozu-Dereza, I liked it, her mother-in-law has been planting her for several years already. This year, I took another variety in the purchase, I don't remember, Kozy still has half a packet from last year. I will plant both, I will compare. I will no longer be bothered with seedlings on my hot balcony, I will plant them in the OG.

Color I have been planting cabbage for only 2 years and it is a pity that the habit of photographing only flowers, otherwise this year the cabbage is just a sight for sore eyes - I was tortured to distribute it to relatives! So I have a strong opinion that seedlings grown in a greenhouse are much more viable than those grown in an apartment, but also leafy celery or coriander in a garden bed in the middle, but at least 1 nasturtium bush is obligatory. But this is personally my poor experience of growing in our cold climate.

Nefteyuganochkahttp://dacha.wcb.ru/index.php?showtopic=8215&st=30

Cauliflower is a dietary product. It has less fiber than ordinary cabbage, but more proteins and vitamins. And this native of the southern regions is able to take root even in areas with a harsh climate. You just need to adapt to her temper, and the multi-colored heads will become an ornament to both the garden and the table.
