In order to prevent onion and garlic stocks from starting to rot during storage, you should use one of the proven methods.

On a layer of salt at the bottom of a basket or drawer

Table salt is an excellent preservative. It keeps food fresh for a long time. To properly store it in salt, you need a large wicker basket or wooden box. Cover the bottom with a thin kitchen towel or clean cotton cloth.

This is important so that the salt does not fall out of the cracks and absorb moisture, and air is provided to the food. That is why you should not use plastic wrap instead of fabric.

Sprinkle the salt on a towel in a layer about 1 cm thick. Then place the onions or heads of garlic on it. You can put vegetables in several tiers, sprinkling them with salt. The box is placed in a warm, dry place, for example, in a pantry or on a warmed loggia. Under these conditions, the product will not dry out or rot.

In nylon stockings

This storage option is very convenient and practical, and it doesn't take much space to place a stylized container. Capron is almost transparent, so you can control the amount of the product and its condition.

Sandy loam soils are preferred for planting winter garlic in autumn. The beds should be prepared 1-1.5 weeks before planting. To do this, the soil is dug to a depth of 25 cm. All weeds are thoroughly removed, 5-6 kg of humus are introduced (but, in no case, fresh manure), 20 g of potassium salt and 30 g of superphosphate per 1 m2. 1-2 days before planting, ammonium nitrate is also applied to the soil, using 10-12 g of fertilizer per 1 m2 of soil. The dry ground is watered, and the bed is covered with foil before planting the garlic.


Onion wreaths

For a wreath, choose bulbs of the same size with long tails, preferably not very large, then they will not break off during weaving.

To weave an onion wreath, you need to fasten the bulbs together with the tails in a circle. This method is less reliable in comparison with the previous one, but it is very popular among gardeners. Garlic is often stored in the same way.

A ready-made wreath of onions or garlic can be left in any spacious room with little humidity.

Garlic is a little more difficult than onion. The thing is that garlic is divided into two categories: it is spring and winter. Unusual ways to store garlic

In sunflower oil... You will have to tinker here, but, firstly, this method is suitable for storing both spring and winter garlic. Whole heads, alas, or maybe it's, on the contrary, good, it is impossible to use, you need to divide the head into teeth and carefully clean each one.

Further, it all depends on the amount of garlic you have. Of course, this method cannot be considered as such, with which you can save several tens of kilograms of garlic, but a dozen heads - it is quite possible and they will always be at your fingertips in the form of peeled cloves splashing in oil and stored "forever".

So, we divided the head into slices, cleaned each slice, now we need to find an empty, clean, preferably pasteurized jar. Usually they take a liter jar up to half, fill it with refined (precisely refined) sunflower oil, and then slowly pour so much garlic into it so that the oil rises to the top of the jar, it remains to close it with a lid and put it in an ordinary household refrigerator.

The most interesting thing is that the heads of garlic do not spoil and the oil, it acquires a pleasant garlic flavor and goes well for all sorts of spicy salads.

Storing garlic in jars of flour: here you can use any glass jars by volume, from which it will be convenient for you to get garlic. Banks must be clean, sterilized. This method has three storage options, either store whole heads of garlic in jars of flour, or store whole cloves, or peeled cloves - whoever wishes and for whom as convenient. In my opinion, it is more optimal - just cloves of garlic, of course, in skins.

Next, you simply pour a couple of centimeters of flour onto the bottom of the can, a layer of garlic cloves, again a couple of centimeters of flour, and so on to the top of the can. After that, the cans need to be closed, but with a plastic lid (and not rolled up tightly) so that they can be opened periodically and see if the flour is damp (the can must be absolutely dry).

Of course, this method also has one drawback: how to understand if the cloves of garlic in the jar suddenly began to deteriorate? We'll have to empty out the contents of the jar every month and check everything. By the way, if you want to quickly separate the teeth from the flour, then just sift it through a sieve, the teeth will remain in it.

There is one more way storing garlic in combination with flour, it is necessary to hammer the jar to capacity with teeth, leaving only a couple of centimeters of free space on top. So, you need to pour in enough flour so that it covers this free space, and then close the jar with a lid. Here it is easier to observe the teeth and check if they have begun to deteriorate and if the flour has become damp. If it starts to get damp, then remove it as carefully as possible so that it does not get inside the can, remove it and replace it with a new one, completely dry.

Salt... You can use plain table salt instead of flour. But you need to do it differently: first, pour table salt on the bottom of the can, then put the garlic and so on, layer by layer, until the end of the can. The salt should be dry, but as you know, it absorbs moisture, so it can dry out the garlic, hence no lid is needed.

Often the crop dries up or germinates before the New Year. This is due to unsuitable storage conditions, which are important to be aware of.

  1. In salt. Unfortunately, this storage method is used quite often, but unsuccessfully. Salt has a remarkable ability to draw moisture out of its surroundings. Putting garlic in it and waiting for it not to dry is unreasonable.
  2. In a refrigerator . Long-term storage of heads in a refrigerator is impossible.
  3. In sealed bags or cling film. On the one hand, moisture is saved, and on the other, being released from vegetables, it settles on the inside of the polyethylene in the form of condensation. This leads to rotting of the heads.
  4. Separate teeth. Can garlic be stored by disassembling it into wedges? Of course not. It will dry out or germinate very quickly, depending on the humidity of the environment.
