How to get a good harvest of strawberries outdoors

Many gardeners are greatly mistaken in the belief that the yield of strawberries mainly depends on the weather conditions. Naturally, this factor is one of the fundamental, but if you choose the right place, skillfully use fertilizers, organize proper care for the beds with berry bushes, then a good harvest is guaranteed and you can get it in any case.

Is it possible to increase the yield of strawberries

Many people know how to properly plant strawberries, process the beds in the spring and autumn, grow bushes from seeds. But the main question remains - how to improve the yield, how to increase the number of berries from the bush?

Experienced gardeners know what it takes to plant during the season. a large bucket of berries daily... If you have all the secrets of care, in which the use of pesticides and mineral components is far from the first place, then an improvement in yield is quite real.

Instructions on how to increase the yield

To get good yields, it is necessary to select flat areas in the country or in the open ground, with slight slopes in the southwest direction. This will allow the berries to receive the maximum amount of sunlight.

Strawberries love moderate moisture, otherwise plant diseases may develop, harmful parasites become active.

If the site is located in a lowland, you should arrange high beds, reaching thirty centimeters.

Soil requirements to achieve high yields

Gardeners who want to increase the yield of berries need to understand that for this they should carefully prepare the soil composition, starting this event in advance. Any type of soil needs its own additives.

Loamy areas require adding rotted manure and peat... And the sand beds, in addition, are flavored turf and sawdust... Clay places need sand, humus or compost, rotted sawdust... On peat sites add sand and humus.

In addition, nitrophoska is also used - two spoons for each square of the area.

Choosing a good variety with high fruiting

To achieve good yields and fruiting during the summer, early (Roxana, Pomegranate, Beauty Zagorya, Desnyanka), mid-early (Pendant, Zenith, Nadezhda, Redcoat) and mid-late (Cinderella, Lord, Gigantella) types of strawberries are recommended for cultivation.

Correct planting of bushes

Having decided on the varieties, you should plant them correctly. For this prepared beds loosened and watered abundantly.

As a preventive measure, a solution of vitriol is used at the rate of two spoons per bucket of water. One and a half liters of this composition is poured per square meter of planting.

The seedlings are planted in such a way that the heart remains in sight, but is not raised so as not to dry out. The most favorable time for disembarkation is end of july... The weather must be cloudy, or you will have to wait for the evening. In this case, the plants take root better.

The planted seedlings are allowed to be shed from a small watering can. They plant bushes in small holes with a lump of earth... The scheme depends on the selected variety, the determining parameter is the power of the foliage. Disembarkation is carried out with a step of 10-15 centimeters, in double rows. Eighty centimeters are left for the aisle so that it is convenient to organize care.

It is necessary to choose material for planting from young plants, as the strongest and healthiest. As a rule, this is one or two mustaches of a good bush.

By the winter season, properly planted strawberry seedlings will have time to form strong bushes.

Rotation of varieties

Rotation of varieties should not be neglected. The constantly grown berry of the same variety entails the adaptation of disease pathogens to its immunity. Rotation makes it possible not only to determine the most delicious and suitable varieties for your site, but also to reduce the threat of their diseases.

Choosing the right breeding method

The correct breeding method should be determined.

In most cases, new beds are laid with purchased plants and their own planting material. It is necessary to prepare seedlings already during the harvest season... At this moment, the condition of the bushes is assessed, the best ones are determined.

It is recommended to look after and mark those plants on which there are a lot of healthy berries that differ in size evenness. It is from them that you should take material for a new planting in order to lay the next plot.

How to mulch and water

Oddly enough, strawberries need mulching quite badly. The ideal material for mulching is needles... It is able to retain moisture, protect against harmful insects and diseases. Over time, this mulch decays and feeds the beds.

It's okay if there is no way to use pine needles. In this case, straw, grass cuttings, weeds cut off are suitable. With the onset of autumn, when the entire crop is harvested, strawberry bushes are cut and processed, the beds can be sprinkled with a good layer of foliage. It will perfectly protect the beds from frost.

The mulch will keep the soil moist, allowing you to reduce the number of waterings... But you still have to water, since strawberries love water.

Abundant watering is necessary in the spring season, when foliage begins to grow, during flowering and ripening, after each harvest of ripe berries and at the end of autumn processing, if the weather is dry. In a word, if nature does not indulge in precipitation, then you will have to water it regularly.

This should be done in spring and autumn. once a week, in summer the intervals are reduced up to three days, and in dry weather, moisture should be applied daily... It will not be superfluous if, from time to time, during watering, fertilizing compositions are introduced.

Knowledgeable people assure that it is most effective to create three strawberry plots within a three-year period, adding every year to the beds, which will bear fruit alternately.

As soon as the last crop is harvested from the third site, bushes should be dug out from it and burned. Young seedlings are planted in new areas.

Taking into account all the peculiarities of caring for strawberries, you can get excellent yields of this juicy and beautiful berry grown with your own hands.

The most important criteria for increasing yields are as follows:

  1. The use of specific agricultural techniques.
  2. The correct choice of variety.
  3. High quality of planting material.
  4. Patience and responsibility towards culture.

The strawberry yield depends on the selected variety.

With the right approach, it will be possible to collect up to 250 kg of strawberries from one hundred square meters.

What should be the soil

Strawberry is an unpretentious and non-capricious plant. But it gives preference to black soil. But richly fertilized soil also works well.

  • Culture does not like shadow ... Therefore, you need to plant it in the sun. It is not recommended to plant a crop in one place for more than four years in a row.
  • Moisture should not be allowed to stagnate in the soil ... At the same time, the soil must be "airy".

Strawberries grow well on black soil.

What should be the seedlings

Over time, the berry becomes smaller. Its taste is lost. To increase the yield, it is recommended to plant strawberries purchased from a professional nursery.

The plant taken from the nursery gives a good harvest.

This guarantees the health of the culture. Before being sold, it is treated with specific agents that protect it from infections and rot.

Which variety to choose

The best large-fruited varieties are:

  • Primella
  • Gold
  • Humi grande
  • Kamrad winner
  • Chamora Turussi.

The Primella strawberry variety is large-fruited.

The size of the berries is several times larger than those of other varieties. Large-fruited strawberries are also favorably distinguished in terms of taste.

An increase in yield in such a crop is observed in the second 12 months after planting.

Experienced gardeners recommend planting 4-6 different varieties of strawberries. Then the culture will bear fruit throughout the season.

The desired scheme for combining strawberry varieties is presented on the plate.

VarietynumberWhen it bears fruit
Early ripe1–2First half of July
Average2–3Mid July - early August
Late1Mid August to mid September

It is advisable to plant each crop variety in a separate garden bed. They should not be allowed to coexist. Spread the strawberry beds evenly over the area.

Landing place

Growing strawberries outdoors begins with choosing a planting site. Strawberries prefer sandy loam or loamy soil, they need to be nutritious and breathable. Black soil with ash is well suited, but strawberries do not like peatlands. Neutral soils with a Ph value of 5.5–6.5 are best suited. If the soil is too acidic, then it is deoxidized by sprinkling dolomite flour in the fall and digging it to the depth of a shovel.

Strawberries should not be planted in swampy and flooded areas, otherwise they will rot. The groundwater should be at a depth of at least 0.8 m. Seedlings should not be placed in lowlands, otherwise the bushes will hurt due to too cold air. It is better that the surface of the site is flat, but it can also be with some slope to the southwest.

It is required to select a place that would be protected from the winds, since for the normal survival of the bushes in winter, strawberries need a layer of snow 25 cm thick. On one garden bed, strawberries are grown for no more than 4 years, otherwise the soil becomes depleted in substances that it accumulates viruses and harmful insects.

Pick the brightest place on the site, then the berries will be juicy and sweet. If you plant the bushes in the shade, you will pick sour and tasteless berries.

Features of growing berries in the Urals

You can plant strawberries in the ground in the Urals in early spring or early autumn. Planting plants in the spring can deprive the owner of the harvest in the current year, so this is more often done in late August - early September. Such a planting schedule allows young plants to adapt to new conditions, take root and gain enough strength for successful wintering.

Under favorable conditions, strawberry seedlings may begin to grow mustache before winter. Unfortunately, they must be removed, since young plants unreasonably spend too much energy on their maintenance.

You can grow strawberries in the Urals in the open field using traditional technology or using progressive methods. Each method has its own characteristics, however, the basic rules of cultivation are unchanged.

Planting strawberries in the ground

Strawberries can be grown in garden beds or as a solid plantation. The beds should be high embankments with gentle edges. It is recommended to plant strawberries in two rows. A small groove can be made between them, into which the drip hose will subsequently be placed.

The density of planting is of particular importance. The thing is that thickened plantings contribute to the development of all kinds of diseases, the leaves and berries of plants receive little light, and are poorly ventilated. Strawberry seedlings should be staggered. Distances between rows can be from 30 cm. Strawberry bushes in one row should be planted at least 20 cm to each other.

Before planting strawberry seedlings, you should take care of the nutritional value of the soil. This is especially important for the conditions of the Urals. So, the manure embedded in the soil will additionally warm the plants in this cold climate. Manure can be placed in the soil during the autumn digging of the earth or in the spring, just before planting. As for other crops, rotted manure should be used for strawberries, while horse excrement will give off the maximum amount of heat.

In addition to manure, some minerals must be added to the soil before planting strawberry seedlings, namely potassium and phosphorus. These microelements will speed up the process of plant rehabilitation in new conditions and improve the taste of berries. So, before planting seedlings, potassium sulfate and superphosphate should be added to the soil, in the amount of 15 and 40 g of each substance, respectively. You can replace these fertilizers with natural wood ash. Dry it is sprinkled on the soil surface during digging. Nutrients can also be added directly to the wells prior to planting.

Plant care

Having planted plants in the fall, they must be watered before the onset of cold weather as the soil dries out. For irrigation, you need to use warm water (+20 0 С). Watering strawberries can be done by sprinkling.

In some cases, strawberry bushes planted in the fall begin to release flower stalks, but they must be removed so that the plants gain enough strength for winter. With the arrival of cold weather, strawberry plantings must be covered with a layer of geotextile and spruce branches. This will prevent the plants from freezing in the winter.

Spring chores

With the arrival of heat, in April, it is necessary to raise the covering material from the ridges and feed the plants with complex fertilizer. Dry leaves and litter should be removed from the garden, cut off the bushes.

An example of how to properly trim strawberries in spring is shown in the video:

When the first flowers appear, it is recommended to feed the strawberries a second time. For this, you can use complex fertilizers "Iskra", "Alatar" or others. At the same time, it will be useful to fertilize strawberries with wood ash. The whiskers that appear on the plants still need to be removed. They can be planted on the mother bed for rooting and growing green mass, and then transferred to a place of constant growth.

Before the first berries appear, strawberry bushes must be regularly watered and fertilized. At this time, you can use drip irrigation or sprinkling. Potash and phosphate fertilizers can be added to the water for irrigation. Also, as necessary, weeds should be removed from the beds, and loosening should be carried out.

How to increase and protect the harvest in summer

After the formation of berries and as they ripen, it is recommended to use only drip irrigation, since moisture on the surface of the berries can cause them to rot. When observing symptoms of infection with viral or fungal diseases, strawberries must be treated with special antiseptic agents. In this case, Bordeaux liquid at a concentration of 1% will remove harmful microflora on plants and in the soil, as well as feed strawberries and improve the process of fruit formation. You can use such a tool for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes.

Fertilizing strawberries during the ripening of berries with mineral complexes is not worth it, since the fruits can accumulate nitrates in themselves. If necessary, yeast fertilizers or organic matter can be used for feeding.

You can feed strawberries with a solution of fresh yeast prepared in a 1:10 ratio. Fertilization with bread infusion is also an effective remedy. To do this, the crusts of yeast bread are soaked in water and, after insisting, they spread the resulting mass on a bed with strawberries, embedding it in the ground by loosening. A large amount of harmless nitrogen is found in coffee grounds, which can also be applied to the soil.Traditional feeding with mullein and herbal infusion also allows plants to gain enough strength to form a large number of tasty and healthy berries.

I don’t forget the vegetable garden after harvesting

After picking the berries of the first wave of the harvest, the plants should be fed with a mineral complex fertilizer. If we are talking about ordinary strawberries, then before the onset of cold weather, it is necessary to additionally process plants from insects and fungi. To do this, you can use wood ash or Bordeaux liquid, iodine (8 drops per bucket of water). It is worth noting that dusting strawberries with wood ash repels some insects, prevents the development of fungal diseases and feeds plants with phosphorus, potassium, calcium and other minerals. After fruiting, the soil on the ridges should also not be allowed to dry out by periodically watering the plants moderately.

If we are talking about a remontant plant, then a few weeks after picking the berries of the first wave it will be possible to see a new stage of flowering. At this time, strawberries must be watered abundantly, fertilized and treated with pest drugs. In the absence of such care, the berries of the second wave will be small and "ugly". After picking the berries, it is necessary to fertilize the plants with mineral fertilizers again.

With the onset of cold weather, regardless of the frost resistance of the variety, it is recommended to cover strawberries in the open ground of the Urals to prevent freezing. Geotextiles, burlap, polyethylene, spruce branches can be used as a covering material.

Thus, the cultivation of strawberries in the open field of the Urals consists of a number of successive stages, during the implementation of which it is necessary to take into account the stage of plant vegetation. Timely correct watering and a sufficient amount of fertilizing allow you to get a good harvest of berries many times, without depleting plants of remontant varieties.

Seedling selection

If you want to get a rich harvest, then purchase elite varieties, preferably the first reproduction.

  • Seedlings should be healthy, well-calibrated and well-rooted.
  • The most successful places for planting strawberries are the southern and southwestern slopes with a slope of 2 degrees.
  • In such areas, the berries, as a rule, ripen 2 weeks earlier. Growing strawberries is not recommended. In lowlands, ravines, gullies.

Planting material prepared for planting

  • The ideal acidity of the soil solution is considered to be a level of 5.5 - 6.0.
  • Seedlings can be planted in open ground, both in spring and autumn.
  • If you decide to plant seedlings in the spring, then do it as early as possible, as soon as weather conditions permit.

Quality seedlings - a good harvest

  • Before planting in the ground, it is advisable to harden the seedlings, accustom them to open ground conditions.
  • When planting, do not deepen the neck of the bush, it should be flush with the ground.
  • The roots should be placed vertically in the hole.
  • If the roots are too long, they can be trimmed. This technique stimulates the formation of additional lateral roots.

Observe the rules of care

How to get a big harvest:

This is the most important point at the beginning.... When using bad varieties, even perfect agricultural technology will not provide a good harvest.

Plant strawberries in a new place every 3-4 years... It is for such a period of time that the plants give good yields in one place, after which the indicators inevitably decrease.

Examine plants carefully during flowering and fruiting... All bushes without berries or very few strawberries should be removed. They are completely dug up.

Whiskers and extra leaves take up a lot of nutrients.... Therefore, it is advisable to remove them so that all resources go to the formation and ripening of berries.

Be sure to pre-prepare the site... It should be nutritious and well loosened. For disinfection, you can spill with a solution of potassium permanganate 3 days before work.

Transplant at the end of July or the first half of August... Then the plants will take root well, they will normally endure the winter and will give a normal harvest the next year.

Mulch not only protects berries from decay... It reduces the evaporation of moisture and plants are much better supplied with water.

It is best to use a drip system, as in the example in the photo.... It gives the best results and wets the soil well with low water consumption.

You can not get a rich harvest without top dressing... You can use either ready-made mineral complexes for garden strawberries, or organic matter - infusion of mullein or bird droppings.

It is best to carry out preventive spraying in spring and autumn.... There is no need to wait for outbreaks of diseases, it is much easier and cheaper to prevent them.

How to avoid problems when growing strawberries

An interesting question - what is the difference between an experienced gardener and a beginner? Is it only years of "gardening" experience, and how many do you need? You can determine who you are - a student or a master - at the moment when you are faced with a certain problem when growing plants.

How to avoid common problems when growing strawberries outdoors, read on and see the attached table.

All novice gardeners are actively asking authoritative experts about ways to solve the problem, looking for answers to questions in all the numerous sources of information currently available. Truly experienced people, when a problem occurs, contact us first. to the plants themselves. And who better than themselves can know and tell about what they need?

Experience comes when you begin to understand the language of plants, they themselves point out to us our mistakes and shortcomings in care:

ProblemSolution to the problem
Low yield on plants over 3 years old, small berriesFirst of all, it is necessary to replace and rejuvenate the plantings.
Sour watery berries of a pale color, a loose bush shape, elongated leaf stalks and a very long mustacheThe plants are planted in a shady area and suffer from a lack of direct sunlight. For good growth and fruiting, plants need at least 7-8 hours of direct sunlight.
Plants overwinter poorly, in spring there is a large percentage (more than 20%) of lungesOn plants of the autumn planting date, the main reasons are late planting, poor seedling quality or an unsuitable variety. For plants older than 3 years of age, this is most often a signal about the need to replace the plantings - the end of the economic life. Often - an unfortunate place - a damp lowland or a slope blown in winter
Good, abundant flowering in spring, but small berries in small quantities in summerFrost damage during flowering. Lack of nutrients during the ripening period of berries (no top dressing was carried out).
Lack of soil moisture during the ripening period of berries (no watering was carried out in dry weather)
Abundant leaf growth with very little or no flowering. For plants of common varieties of the 1st year of life in the spring or late autumn period of planting, this phenomenon is normal. For plants of the 2nd year of life, this can signal an excess of nitrogen fertilizers in the soil (overfed) or damage to plants by intracellular viral infection
In the second half of summer, foliage is heavily affected by spots.Bad wet spot and too tight planting pattern. Choosing an unsuitable unstable variety
Very late and weak flowering, berries ripen for a long time, some of them never turn red completelyUnsuitable southern variety requiring more heat
Large percentage of plants damaged by root rotUnfortunate damp place. Unsuitable, unstable variety.
"Soil fatigue" - a new plot for strawberries is needed
Weak plant growth, light color of foliage, small berries, little whiskers, often affected by spider mitesPlants suffer from a lack of moisture during the growing season - regular watering and mulching are needed
