Making a homemade pond filter: an overview of the 2 best designs

The summer pond resembles a small world in which its own special life rages: plants develop and bloom, underwater inhabitants scurry about, something new happens every day. To ensure the vital activity of the reservoir, it must be cleaned at least occasionally by one of the generally accepted methods - using a skimmer, vacuum cleaner, pumping station or home-made device. For gentle water purification from silt, it is enough to assemble a pond filter with your own hands and connect it to the mains.

Does the pond really need filtration?

There are several conflicting opinions about whether an additional cleaning device should be installed in the pond. Proponents of natural cleaning believe that there is no point in filtering a natural reservoir, since everything inside it is already provided by nature itself.

A picturesque, beautiful pond with clear, crystal clear water is the result of a lot of work to clean it from debris, silt and algae

Equilibrium is established by beneficial marsh plants that serve a number of useful functions:

  • deliver oxygen to the water;
  • block the development of harmful algae;
  • enrich the environment with the necessary chemical elements;
  • increase the transparency of water;
  • are a wonderful decor.

For small ponds, spikelet and autumn marsh are suitable, for larger ponds - elodea and hornwort. Representatives of the underwater fauna are also a kind of cleaners. For example, crayfish and grass carp feed on duckweed and other polluting algae.

The dark green hornwort, a popular aquarium plant, has proven itself to be a pond nurse. It develops well in any climate, grows quite quickly

In reservoirs created artificially on a film material, biological cleaning agents containing cleaning bacteria are often used. They kill algae, but are not suitable for fish ponds. One of the sparing solutions is the use of peat mixtures, which make the water less hard and prevent the development of algae.

Many are sure that human intervention is indispensable. Be sure to remove dry twigs and grass, fallen leaves and other debris from the surface of the water. If the water is too cloudy and polluted, it is necessary to use special pumping stations, which will be very expensive, or self-made devices, which are much cheaper and more affordable. Consider two options for homemade garden pond filters that can be made quickly and inexpensively.

Option # 1 - filter from the grocery basket

What kind of things are not adapted by dexterous summer residents for their inventions! Any container with openings in which you can put filtering components will work as a filter container. The homemade filter has proven itself remarkably when cleaning a pond with a mirror size of 2.5m x 3.5m.

From above, the body is hermetically sealed with a piece of durable plastic or thick, folded in several layers, film and fixed with self-tapping screws, wire or clamps

List of required materials:

  • medium-sized plastic grocery basket as a body;
  • drain siphon;
  • submersible pump Atman AT-203;
  • silicone sealant;
  • cushioning fumlent;
  • fitting + nut (brass kit);
  • 2 clamps;
  • pieces of foam rubber;
  • 4 hard washcloths;
  • PVC hose (1 m).

Many of the listed materials can be easily found in the country, others are sold in a building supermarket. There is a chance to buy the Atman AT-200 series pump in the All for aquariums store. The pump perfectly cleans the water and at the same time enriches it with oxygen. Several tools are included to adjust the power. The submersible motor runs safely and has a low noise level. The device operates on a 220V network, has a power of 38W. For a small unit, it has an acceptable capacity of 2000 l / h. Perfect for ponds up to 2 meters deep.

A pond half cleared of algae. The water is still cloudy and has a greenish tint, but no harmful plants are observed, and the bottom is cleared of silt

Any material that absorbs or retains dirt can be used as filtering components: expanded clay, packed in agrofibre; foam mats, twisted in rolls; plastic rugs with holes; old washcloths.

For ease of use and further cleaning, filter materials should be large in size, ideally the size of a basket

All this is loaded in layers into a container (basket), then a siphon and a hose are attached with the help of a sealant.

A hole for the siphon is drilled on the side to allow water to flow freely into the filter. The connection of the siphon with the body must be thoroughly greased with sealant

The pump is immersed in water and connected to the network. For safety reasons, the socket must be packed in a waterproof casing.

Any network connections must be tightly closed from the outside. The shroud can be made of durable plastic, thick rubber or leather

It is not necessary to overflow - if the filter becomes dirty, the water will naturally overflow and flow into the drain.

Option # 2 - plastic bucket filter

The second homemade pond filter is a submersible device that must be installed at the bottom of the pond. The volume of the pond is about 5 m³, the depth is from 1 m. The design can be any, but the chosen option is the cheapest and most functional, reminiscent of factory filters sold in a store.

General view of a home-made filter device: a spacious case with filter material (foam rubber) and a lid with a rigidly fixed aquarium pump

Anyone who is engaged or at least interested in aquarium hobby knows several popular pump models. One of the most successful is the Polish device AQUAEL FAN 2. The advantages of the device lie in its technical characteristics: reliability, creation of the desired flow, excellent air supply and atomization.

The pump has two main parts: filter housing; housing with motor (plus travel regulator and connections). Power is supplied from a standard 220 V network, power - 7.2 W

What to make a frame from?

You will need a plastic bucket with a capacity of 10 liters, which plays the role of a housing for the filter element. It is desirable that the plastic is relatively strong and can withstand a load of at least 15 kg. For decorative purposes, the color of the underwater bucket should match the color of the bottom, that is, be brown, gray or black.

For full functioning, a little modification is required. In the side walls of the bucket, it is necessary to drill holes of small diameter (4-5 mm) - water will flow into them for cleaning. Some plastics are brittle, so you need to drill very carefully. A large hole must be cut in the lid to hold the filter in it. You also need a little ventilation for air out - another hole in the lid, but already small - 3 mm.

When calculating the diameter of the openings, take into account the size of particles of sludge or debris that can block the flow of water for filtration

Filter assembly order

Foam rubber is ideal as a filtering material - it perfectly absorbs moisture, retains dirt and is easy to clean. The optimum layer thickness is 50 mm, but other formats can be used. Foam mats are used several times.

Assembly instruction:

  1. We fix the filter housing to the pump cover using a sealant or hot melt glue.
  2. We attach the pump body to the cover.
  3. Place the foam mats along the sides of the bucket. At the bottom we put two or three stones with a total weight of 5 kg - as a weighting agent.
  4. Fill the rest of the bucket with foam rubber.
  5. We fix the cover using wire or clamps.

A thick layer of waterproof sealant or hot melt glue will prevent water from entering the top of the pump between the cover and pump body

Unit connection and installation

For operation, the device must be connected to a 220 V power supply. The plug and socket connection must be protected from any ingress of moisture. For this, you can use a casing made of moisture-repellent material. The RCD installed on the line will trip in case of current leakage and turn off the network.

The diagram shows the cycle of water in the cleaning process: under the influence of a pump, it enters the filter, and then, already purified, back into the pond

To install the filter, you need to choose a flat section of the bottom, mainly in a deep place. We lower the filter into the water, after which it naturally sinks to the bottom of the reservoir.

Then we connect the power supply and equip the water outlet after cleaning. For aeration, a thin hose should be connected to the pump, which with the other end will be above the water mirror.

There are many modifications of self-made filters for cleaning the pond, and to increase productivity, each craftsman can bring something of his own, functional and useful.

With your own hands - How to do it yourself

A pond in a garden is always something special. Something interesting happens in the water and near the water: birds swim, fish grab food, water lilies flaunt their petals, dragonflies play, water striders compete with the reflections of the clouds ... Do you want to create such an idyll with your own hands?

A small decorative pond is possible in just 4 hours of work. True, there are a couple of restrictions: you still have to give up fish and use a ready-made container. This makes it easier to set up a pond than using a film.

There are containers of various shapes and sizes on sale, there are even mini-models of real-life natural reservoirs, for example, the Aral Sea or Lake Chiemsee (Bavaria). The technical components such as filter and pump should be selected according to the dimensions of the future pond. A consultant in the store will help you with this. You will find what else you need in the list of materials.

To make a pond in the country, you will need

Pond tank • filter • pump • fountain • underground cable • hose • sand • soil • aquatic plants • decorative pebbles

For landscaping an artificial reservoir, the following aquatic plants are suitable: common tail, water hyacinth, marsh marigold, swordtail rush, narrow-leaved cattail, iris water. The banks will be decorated with cylindrical impera, pampas grass and bamboo. Many of these plants are tropical. In Central Russia, when grown in containers, they will have to be moved to an aquarium for the winter.

Registration

The surrounding landscape is able to give an artificial reservoir a unique look. Several methods of design finishing of the peri-ore and water space are used:

  1. Plants are planted at the bottom and near the coast. To do this, they are placed in special containers that are placed in the right places. It is recommended to use crops that thrive in the local climate.
  2. In the central part of the reservoir, you can make a miniature island. A large boulder decorated with plants is suitable for this.
  3. Beautiful stones of various sizes are laid out along the coast, garden figures are arranged, paths are organized.
  4. They build a fountain, waterfall or alpine slide.
  5. Artificial lighting of the shores and surface of the lake is organized.

How to make a bath pond

I met a lot of ponds in summer cottages made from an ordinary bath. I decided to share with you the instructions for creating. Baths, which were produced in Soviet times, were created from cast iron. This material is resistant to any temperature. So why not take an old bathtub and make a pond out of it in the garden.

Apart from the fact that the costs are not needed. And even more so, a number of advantages were revealed: cast-iron baths are durable, the enamel of the coating is stable, does not make unnecessary noise when filled with water, it is as easy as shelling pears to create a pond out of it. To create a pond bath, you need to follow these steps: close the drain tightly, dig a pit with a margin for installation, lower the bathtub into this hole, fill in and tamp the cracks, walk with glue along the inside, after the glue has completely dried, lay the mesh-netting, then apply a mixture of cement and decorate it. Your pond bath is ready!

After reading the article, you can create a pond with your own hands. I wish you success.
