Spring weekdays for a gardener: work calendar for April – May 2020-2021

The first days of spring for every amateur gardener are associated with pleasant chores. It is too early to work actively in the garden, but there are many things that are important to do right here and now: remove winter shelters from plants, prune shrubs, organize prevention of berry and fruit trees, and whitewash.

April, April - drops are ringing in the yard: what to do in the garden

The first sunny days, the first thunderstorm - the sun warmed up, the rain poured and the plants began to wake up before our eyes: buds swell, hazel grouse, hyacinth, lungwort, primrose bloom, the first leaves are breaking through on the currant, the apricot is about to turn pink with fragrant flowers. It's a hot season for the gardener: it is necessary to check how the berry has overwintered, whether the snow cover has broken the branches too much, if the strawberries have bare roots during wintering, it should be tamed, and the primroses are waiting for loosening and feeding.

What else needs to be done in April?

  • Examine trees and bushes. Before the stage or at the moment of the "green cone" (the kidneys are swollen, they are about to burst), preventive treatment is carried out against pests, scab and other fungal and bacterial diseases.

Early spring processing is considered the most effective - most pests are activated precisely in late March - early April

  • The next step is to dig up the trunk circle of adult fruit trees, after the procedure, the soil is leveled with a rake. In young seedlings, ornamental perennials, currants, gooseberries, honeysuckle, the root space is also carefully loosened (this will increase the access of moisture and oxygen to the roots), since many garden shrubs have roots close to the soil surface.
  • It's time to whitewash the trees, this procedure is carried out in the 1st half of April.

Experts recommend whitening trees in autumn, spring whitewashing is more decorative than antifungal in nature, but this does not detract from the importance of the procedure

  • If the snow on the site has not completely melted, measures should be taken to retain the snow or, conversely, if necessary, get rid of the excess snow mass.
    • Where stagnant melting snow is undesirable (beds with strawberries, podzimny sowing of green crops in the garden, a flower garden with early spring perennials), it is necessary to make an outflow of water - to dig shallow grooves (they should be located at an angle), which will allow excess water to be removed from the beds.
    • Sometimes it is necessary to carry out snow retention, for example, to trample the snow, and under the trees you can accumulate snowdrifts that have not yet melted in the garden - this is done around trees, in elevated areas, near berry bushes located in the sun. Melting snow will slowly saturate the soil surface with moisture, especially if April is dry and warm.
  • If at the end of March the weather did not allow, now they remove last year's foliage, dry branches on the site, remove spruce branches and other insulation from the vineyard, roses, and other thermophilic shrubs that winter under cover. It is recommended to burn the garbage (but first you should familiarize yourself with the normative acts - clause 218 of the RF Fire Safety Regulations, Article 20.4 of the Administrative Offenses Code of the Russian Federation and the order of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of January 26, 2016) or take it out of the garden area.
  • It's time to feed the trees and shrubs. Now the most effective will be complex mineral fertilizers with a high content of nitrogen and phosphorus (Urea, Azofosk, Nitroammofosk) - they are applied in the root space or in the near-trunk circle in a dry form, the substances quickly dissolve on wet soil.

Nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizers are especially important for fruit and berry crops in spring, due to their complex composition, such preparations help to strengthen the root system, build up green mass

  • April is the time when sanitary and formative pruning of fruit trees and berries is carried out. At the beginning of the month, they work with trees and shrubs, from the 20th it is possible to cut off the grapes - by this time it is already clear where the buds are alive and which shoots need to be cut.

It's time to prune currants: shorten long shoots, cut out old ones, thin out the bush

  • Raspberries and blackberries are tied to the trellis.

Temporary supports for remontant raspberries are needed to make harvesting easier in summer.

  • Root and foliar feeding of conifers is carried out (using Kristalon, Zircon, Green needle).
  • From the middle of the month, summer residents begin to plant trees. For example, this can be done by budding, when a cut is made on the bark and a single bud is grafted onto a thin layer of wood.
  • The second or third decade of the month is excellent for planting seedlings of fruit trees, grapes and berry bushes. Now you can plant any trees, but experts say that spring is the best time for stone fruits (plum, cherry, apricot, cherry plum and others). It is best to plant trees and shrubs in damp, cool weather: plantings are watered, mulched with a layer of peat or dry grass. It is recommended to moisten the root space of young seedlings every 3-5 days during the first 2-3 weeks - this way the new inhabitants of the garden will quickly take root and grow.

Grape seedlings are well accepted in April

The best time for planting stone fruit crops (cherry, plum, sweet cherry, cherry plum, apricot) is early spring. And here you shouldn't be late with landing. Usually trees are planted in spring in the first week after the start of field work. Remember, an annual seedling has no developed branches. A two-year-old should have 2-3 additional branches. The root system should also be developed - at least 3 main skeletal roots. Their length depends on the age of the seedling: in one-year-olds on all types of rootstocks - at least 20 cm, in two-year-olds - 25 cm. It is worth paying attention to trees with a closed root system. Some sellers are cunning: right before the sale, they transplant a tree from open ground into a pot and pass it off as a closed root system! It is easy to check: if a seedling sways from touch, it means that it is not native. Pay attention that the planting material is without leaves. No matter how small the leaf is, it requires nutrition and moisture, which it takes from the roots. They look at the place and quality of the vaccine: it should be free of any defects - without sagging, cuts, bark ruptures, decay.

Annual trees take root best of all, they get sick less often and get used to new conditions faster

Video: simple and affordable about budding fruit trees

In early April, I water strawberries, currants, raspberries, honeysuckle with diluted urea (according to the instructions), I process berry bushes, a flower garden with roses and fruit trees from a spray bottle with Topaz (prevention of fungal diseases and fruit rot). It is recommended to repeat the procedure with Topaz after 10-14 days.

On the advice of the nursery staff, in which we purchase planting material every season, from about 10 to 20 April, depending on the weather, on a sunny, dry day we spray the garden (apple, pear, plum, cherry, vineyard) with a mixture of two preparations - Skor (from most fungal and bacterial diseases) and Fufanon (effective against pests). We repeat the processing after 7-10 days, but certainly before the flowering of garden crops.

In the last days of April, when the rudiments of the first peduncles appear on the bushes, I loosen and feed strawberries with Borofoskaya (10 g per bucket of settled water), I do the same with honeysuckle, currants and raspberries.

In April, for treatment against fungal diseases, I use a 3% solution of Bordeaux liquid - I carry out prophylaxis before the leaves bloom in order to avoid burns of young foliage.

From pests, Decis, Lightning, Spark are best suited during this period - I treat viburnum with them, it is attacked by aphids in the first warm days.

May chores in the garden

The fragrant May Garden is a heavenly place: shrubs and trees appeared in all their glory, even the autumn garden exposition is incomparable with the spring one. Only the gardener knows how much work and time all this splendor is worth. The owner of the site is still full of worries. What does May Garden expect from a gardener?

  • Now you can start getting layering of berry bushes. The lower branches of currants, honeysuckle, gooseberries are bent to the ground, secured with a metal bracket and sprinkled with a fertile layer of soil. Shoots pressed to the ground require regular moisture - this will speed up the process of root formation in future seedlings.

Already at the end of August, the resulting layers can be separated from the mother bush and transplanted to a permanent place.

  • The vine is tied to a trellis, then the whole bush and its ground part are treated with 3% Nitrofen. This liquid preparation against ticks and leaf spot is considered the most effective at this time (take 200 g of Nitrafen per 10 liters of water - the amount required for 2-3 adult bush, taking into account soil cultivation).
  • May is the month of return frosts. To increase immunity, the orchard experts recommend sprinkling with a "cocktail" of two preparations - Epin and Zircon.
  • By the end of the month - after flowering - repeat the preventive treatment of horticultural crops against diseases and pests. For this, Horus is suitable - after flowering, if the shrubs - currants, raspberries, gooseberries - are still blooming, Fitoverm can be used.
  • In May, beds with strawberries, berry bushes and ornamental perennials, a trunk circle of adult fruit trees are mulched. Use the material at hand: fine sawdust, wood chips or needles are suitable.

Mulching fruit and berry crops helps control weeds and slows down the evaporation of moisture from the soil surface

  • The stem growth of mature trees is cut “on the ring” (to the base).
  • It is not too late to carry out thinning in raspberries - this culture wakes up later than currants and gooseberries. Right now, frozen branches are clearly visible: if dead wood is found, it is cut out at the root, thickening shoots are also removed.
  • The mineral fertilizing of fruit trees is repeated. It is recommended to add liquid organic matter to the solution with complex fertilizer. Ornamental crops - clematis, roses, barberry, hydrangea - especially need replenishment at the end of May before flowering.

In May, you can start preparing the infusion of organic fertilizers. For example, pour a bucket of fresh mullein with water for 3-5 days, dilute the resulting infusion with water 1: 5, add 3 liters of wood ash and water the garden crops (2-3 buckets per adult tree and about 7-10 liters under one bush of currant, honeysuckle or 2-3 buckets per 1 sq. m. of raspberries).

If there is no time to mess around with the preparation of liquid organic fertilizer on your own, there is a packaged liquid mullein on sale - it remains to dilute and feed

Homogeneous and straw manure (with straw bedding) is most saturated with nutrients. With the addition of sawdust (this is what is most often sold), it decomposes slowly, losing a significant part of nitrogen. Mineral fertilizers are, of course, not an alternative, but rather an addition to organic fertilizers and an "ambulance" for plants, sometimes significantly relieving our worries. Berry growers are insatiable "gluttonous" already from the age of three, especially the black currant. Most of all, it consumes nitrogen, then, in decreasing order, potassium and phosphorus. Raspberries love highly fertile soil and do not tolerate chlorine-containing fertilizers. It feeds on nitrogen in early spring and after picking berries, potassium with phosphorus - during flowering and fruit setting. Only consumes them in almost the same amount. For 1 sq. m of raspberries, I advise you to close up 2 kg of the organic-mineral fertilizer "Universal" or 12 kg of rotted manure in combination with feeding with herbaceous infusions from dream with swan - in May. Adult bushes of garden strawberries are fertilized with a complex chlorine-free fertilizer "For strawberries and strawberries" containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and all trace elements. This is done at the very beginning of the growing season, in April – May, as well as during flowering and when fruit sets.

Video: how to spray the garden in spring

In May, the fight against ants begins. We glue the trees with trapping belts from pests or with scotch tape soaked in special preparations (Great Warrior, Muratsid), put pieces of burlap soaked in kerosene under the currant bushes. It's time to prepare the "green fertilizer" on nettles and dandelions: push 1/3 of the freshly cut grass into the barrel, fill it with warm water, cover with burlap and let it brew for 5-7 days. May weather is quite conducive to fermenting future fertilizer - the characteristic smell will tell you that the green stuff is ready. I dilute the infusion 1: 4 with settled water, add boric acid (5 g per 10 liters of water) and water the strawberries and berry bushes - 1 liter per strawberry bush and 5 liters is enough for one specimen of any berry culture.

Gardener's work calendar for April and May 2021: a list of spring work in the country

Spring is always a long-awaited season for summer residents. The snow has not yet completely melted, and many are already rushing to the dacha. Check how the trees planted in the fall were there, whether the berries survived the frost, whether the branches of the bush did not break under the weight of the snow?

Well, then the most interesting thing begins - preparation for the garden season and the first spring work. Digging the land, planning the garden, forming the planting stock, etc.

Many gardeners have long been guided by the lunar calendar and are working in accordance with the lunar cycle.

In this article, we will tell you what gardening activities should be planned according to the lunar calendar in April and May 2021.

Fertile and barren days by zodiac sign

Sidereal month - the time when the moon passes all 12 signs of the zodiac (each of them belongs to a certain element).

The signs of the zodiac are divided: fertile and infertile, male and female, dry and wet. Already from this division, it can be concluded on which days which work should be carried out.

Women's signs: Taurus, Cancer, Pisces, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn.

They are considered the most fertile. An excellent time for sowing, planting, replanting, watering and feeding.

Male signs: Libra, Gemini, Aries, Sagittarius, Aquarius, Leo.

These signs do not recommend planting most of the crops and watering the plants.

In the table below you will find a brief description of each sign:

Female signDescriptionMale signDescription

Gardener and gardener calendar

Gardener lunar calendar was compiled in antiquity, through long-term observations of the influence of the moon on all living things, including garden plants.

First of all, different phases of the moon have different effects on the growth and development of plants. It has long been noted that the days of new and full moons are not suitable for planting and replanting. In the full moon, most of the juices are in the upper part of the plant, in the stem and fruits, and in the new moon, on the contrary, in its underground part - in the tubers and roots.

Seeds that fall into the ground with a waxing moon are programmed to grow more actively and develop above the ground, and those that were planted with a waning moon have the opposite tendency to develop downward underground. Therefore, plants whose fruits are above the ground, gardeners and gardeners need to sow and plant with the growing moon. And all the roots - with the waning moon. With this in mind, the gardener's lunar calendar has been compiled, which will help you grow a wonderful harvest.

Gardener's lunar sowing calendar 2021 will allow you to always be aware of what is the phase of the moon, and what phase of the moon will be without the need for visual observation.

In addition, when working in the garden and vegetable garden, it is important to consider which sign of the zodiac the moon is in, since all signs are divided into fertile, signs of average fertility and sterile signs. Fertile Zodiac Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Average fertility signs: Taurus, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn. Barren signs of the zodiac: Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Leo, Aquarius. Observations show that the yield will be higher if, when sowing, the phase of the moon and its location in the fertile sign of the zodiac are taken into account.

We bring to your attention Gardener's lunar sowing calendar 2021 with the indication of the phases of the moon, the position of the moon in the signs of the zodiac, as well as recommendations for gardeners and gardeners, which you can download and print. The gardener's lunar calendar 2021 (table) will help you take into account the phases and position of the moon in the signs of the zodiac when working in the garden and vegetable garden. Taking into account the influence of the moon on plants, you will be able to plan your agricultural work correctly.
