How to install a lock on a wicket or gate from a profile pipe

Installing the lock on the gate is the final stage of installing the fence. Most often, summer residents and owners of private houses install gates, the frame of which is made of shaped pipes - this is a solid structure that allows you to beautifully decorate the gate with forging elements. In addition, the profile tube provides a ready-made seat for the seat, and there is no need to think about how to insert the lock more conveniently. It is not difficult to mount the lock in the profile pipe - it is enough to cut out the socket and make the necessary holes, in this case you will not have to resort to welding. Consider how to install a lock on a gate with your own hands for this particular design.

Gates and wickets made of a profile pipe are very common with us - this is a convenient and inexpensive option, and it is quite possible to install a lock in such a structure on your own.

Varieties of lock designs

Many owners think about which lock is better to put on the gate. There are many types of locks today, but the installation principle for most of them is common.

So, on the market there are:

  • Mortise and overhead. Still the most widespread are mortise locks, installed in a groove cut by a grinder, and overhead locks, for which you need to drill holes for fasteners.
  • Combination locks. Combination locks are often used on gates; in this system, it is convenient that keys are not required. To enter, you need to dial a code (which can be changed at will), and from the outside the lock is opened by pressing a button or turning a lever.
  • Magnetic locks. Many owners choose magnetic locks as convenient and reliable. The design of the magnetic lock has no moving parts, it consists of an anchor plate installed in the door leaf and an electromagnet that is installed on the box. To unlock such a lock, you need a magnetic key, the gate will open after it is applied to the reader.

A combination or magnetic lock is also convenient for installation in profile pipes, this is an option mainly for those who live in the house permanently

Alternatively, you can install a latch on the inside of the gate, and use it as needed when you are at home to quickly lock the gate.

Tools required for work

To install the lock you will need:

  • set of drills;
  • Bulgarian;
  • bit to fix self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver.

The set of components of the lock should include a connecting square, a core, a striker, a set of keys, tie bolts, handles. When buying, we will not be superfluous to check whether all these components are included in the kit.

Lock installation process

First, a markup is applied to the frame - the places for the lock, bolts and fasteners are marked. For drilling, it is important to choose the correct drill bits so that the holes are not too large. Then you can start drilling holes.

When the holes are ready, proceed to install the lock. It should be well fixed. We insert the core, fix it on the self-tapping screws, then the square. After the square is installed, the handles are installed. Padded handles are bolted together. It often happens that the square and tie bolts in length do not fit the profile pipe, since the lock is designed to be installed in a door whose thickness exceeds the thickness of the pipe from which the gate is made. Here you will need a grinder to give the required size to the tie bolts and the square.

On the second wing of the wicket, a striker is installed to fix the lock; it is also necessary to make markings on it first. When you install the striker, you need to check the operation of the lock. If it is difficult to turn the lock, lubricate it with oil.

The quality of the mechanism located on the street will always decrease under the influence of an aggressive environment - the lock can freeze up, snow can get there, from such loads it wears out and breaks much faster. To make the lock work properly and last longer, you can make a protective metal pocket for it, which will prevent the ingress of liquid, and also make the structure itself more rigid and reliable. In this case, the handles will also be installed more clearly and firmly.

This quick start guide is suitable for most devices. By following it, you can easily make a lock on your gate or gate without resorting to the services of specialists. We hope this brief overview has helped you understand the installation technology, as well as choose the most suitable type of lock. If you have any questions, please write in the comments.

Even in such a simple design as a gate leaf or a wicket, you can make it in different ways, and there are many options. First of all, the location of the jumpers differs:

  • obliquely
  • horizontally
  • crosswise.

Each method has been tested and works to provide a sufficient degree of rigidity. Here you choose what seems more correct or reliable to you.

The construction of the door made of metal profile with jibs

There is a difference in the design of the doors themselves - with or without a stationary frame (upper crossbar). With a frame, the gates are more stable, but then there are restrictions on height: tall cars - trucks or special equipment - will not be able to enter the courtyard. With proper reinforcement of the racks (pillars) and normally made doors (with reinforcement at the corners), gates without a frame will also be reliable.

Gate structure in the upper crossbar and crossbars

When installing a door with a frame, the metal consumption is greater - by the length of the lintel, but at the same time it is possible not to reinforce the posts additionally: the load on them is less.

Cross-shaped jumpers on the collars made of metal profiles

To make it more convenient to fasten the profiled sheet, a thin-walled metal profile 1 cm wide is welded along the outer (sometimes, inner, as in the picture above) perimeter of the flaps. This must be taken into account when determining the dimensions of the blanks for the flaps.

To make the structure as rigid as possible, so that it does not "walk" and does not make noise in the wind, reinforcement is made in the corners. And again there are two ways. The first is to weld on the corners cut from the sheet metal.

The second is to put short corner braces from the same pipe that welded the frame of the shutters.

The second way to strengthen the gate leaves

There is a difference during assembly: from the joints, pipes are connected at an angle of 45 ° or just butt. More professional - at 45 °, easier - end-to-end. Some assembly methods do not provide for the possibility of joining at an angle at all (if both sashes are assembled in one piece, and only those hung on poles are sawn into two parts).

Different ways of joining pipes

Another subtlety that depends on the amount of snow in winter. As you can see in the photo, the lower bar of the flaps is raised to different heights from the ground - somewhere a few centimeters, somewhere 20 cm and higher. Depends on the height of the snow cover in winter: if there is a pile of snow, and the gate is from the ground itself, you will not open it. To prevent any living creatures from climbing into this gap in the summer, after the snow melts, the bar is screwed onto the self-tapping screws, and it is removed again in late autumn.

Automation can be installed on swing gates. Then you can control them from the remote control and you don't need to go out under the snow and rain.

Does a well need a house?

Some well owners are limited to installing a cover that prevents dirt, dust, insects and other contaminants from entering the source.

But such protection can hardly be called complete, because protection from cold and other factors is also needed.

Another thing is a house that solves several problems at once:

  1. Protects external elements - the head of the barrel, posts and gates - from the effects of environmental factors: sun, precipitation, cold. Protection from cold is especially needed if a surface pump is installed next to the well, which is very common today. When water freezes in it, it will not be limited to stopping the water supply - an expensive unit will fail. And the source itself, if it is shallow, can be covered with ice in severe frost, leaving its owner without life-giving moisture.
  2. Makes the well shaft inaccessible to small children who, playing, could fall into it.
  3. It is a bright and original decorative element that makes the landscape of the site interesting and attractive.

The most suitable material for a well house is certainly wood - a bar or a log. Such a building is in harmony with the surrounding nature, provides sufficient thermal insulation of the internal space and, provided that the material is processed correctly, it can serve for a very long time. Next, we will consider several of the most popular options for do-it-yourself houses for a well from a bar.

How to make a gate from corrugated board with your own hands - step-by-step instructions for making a structure from a metal profile with photos, videos and drawings

A wicket gate on a suburban area is one of the most important elements. This is a kind of gateway to your privacy. Recently, very often you can see a wicket made of corrugated board, built into the fence that encloses the summer cottage. It’s not just that.

After all, the metal profile has a huge number of advantages, for which they loved it so much. It is a durable and reliable material with a long service life and a low price. Besides all this? it has a very aesthetic appearance.

Let's figure out how to make such a gate with our own hands.

Advantages and disadvantages of the material (table)

Choosing the right place

The installation site of the wicket should be carefully thought out. The correct choice of this very place is accompanied by several requirements.

  • The entrance must be unobstructed and secure. It should be possible to pass from it to any of the site's structures.
  • Problematic terrain, cesspools and so on are not the place to install the wicket.
  • Consider mounting locations for multiple entrances if the area is large. This will create additional convenience. In this way, it is possible to create a central and emergency entrance (s).

Preparatory work

How responsibly you approach this stage of work depends on the speed of erection of a wicket on your suburban area. First of all, it is necessary to draw up a detailed diagram of the structure with all dimensions, shapes, decorative elements, handles, locks, hinges, and so on.

The generally accepted standard for design and user characteristics is considered to be the ratio of 100x200 centimeters, width to height, respectively. With the use of such dimensions, the physical characteristics of the sheets and the metal frame will not disturb the windage.

If your gate requires a large size, then it must be strengthened with additional elements.

For the simplest gate supports, the use of 60x60 profiled pipes is suitable. They can be installed without making a foundation, but simply cemented in pits.

You will definitely need an equal metal angle of 25-50 millimeters, corners, iron profiled sheets, fasteners such as self-tapping screws for the roof, hinges and a lock.

You will also need a primer for metal, paint, cement-sand mortar or a special ready-made concrete mixture.

The simplest model of a wicket is considered to be a frame, which is sheathed with a metal profile from the outside.

How to make a gate from corrugated board with your own hands

Simple metal profile wicket

  • Using the diagram you made, dig holes in the ground for the supports. Their depth should be equal to 1/3 of the length of the fence, in which the structural part is a wicket.
  • Immerse the support pipe in the hole and adjust its position with the construction level.
  • Secure it with wooden supports.
  • Fill the posts with the solution.
  • Wait until the solution is completely set. It's about seven days.
  • While you are waiting, so as not to waste time, you can prepare the frame. To do this, cut four components from the pipe: two are 5 millimeters higher than the profile sheet, and two more are 80 millimeters wider than the sheet.
  • A frame must be assembled from these elements. Find a flat surface, lay three wooden beams horizontally on it and lay a rectangular frame made of blanks on them.
  • Weld the corners where structural elements are connected. The frame elements must be welded to each other at an angle of 90 degrees.

Schematic representation of the frame

  • After the welding is finished, it is necessary to clean the seams with a grinder.
  • Attach a crossbar in the center of the "skeleton" to reinforce the structure and facilitate the installation of the metal profile.
  • Treat the "skeleton" with a special agent that protects it from corrosion.
  • If you have corners as blanks, then cut them off at the ends at an angle of 45 degrees according to the internal measured "skeleton". Put the resulting elements on the frame and grab them to the frame in the corners.
  • The hinges are welded with a continuous seam.

  • Paint the structure and the frame is ready.
  • Now it's time to mount the metal profile. Cut out the elements you need in sizes. Lay it out on the frame and fix it with self-tapping screws.
  • The wicket is ready and can be installed on the support posts. Pre-weld the canopies to the posts and paint them with bituminous varnish, and treat them with solid oil inside.
  • Hang the finished gate, weld the bolt and lock to it.

Of course, in order to make a "back door" or build a gate to outbuildings or a garden with decor, you don't have to bother. But the main entrance requires attention.

In order to give the gate a neat and aesthetic appearance, first of all, instead of metal support posts, you can use brick or masonry. Another option for a good design of the front gate can be its shape, which does not have to be rectangular.

It can be designed as an arch. To decorate the entrance, you can build an interesting visor over which climbing plants can be allowed to grow.

If you conduct lighting to the entrance in an original and interesting way, this will also add an additional flavor.

And, of course! The most beautiful and original solution is forged elements on the structure, which not only decorates, but also enhances the strength of the wicket and, to some extent, protects the metal profile from mechanical damage.

    Selecting and setting a ringer

Today there are a huge number of calls for which you do not need to pull wires. These are wireless models. They are very comfortable and meet all the necessary requirements. But how to choose the right one for you among the many models?

Regular ringing works by transmitting the signal over wires to a speaker located in the room. Wireless calling works in much the same way. Only the signal does not go through wires, but through radio waves.

The outdoor model of a wireless call should be equipped with a special visor that protects the button from the effects of natural factors. This visor should in no case drown out the signal. In addition, the internal mechanisms of the bell must also be reliably protected from moisture, dust, and so on.

When choosing a model, make sure that it will withstand temperature changes. The outdoor model should be made of metal so that it will not be damaged by, for example, vandals.

The advantages of a wireless device include ease of installation, ease of use, and no wiring. At any time, it can be removed and moved to another place. Such calls have an aesthetic appearance.

The disadvantages of the model are that if it is attached with Velcro, then it is not very well fixed, so it is better to do this with screws. It requires frequent replacement of batteries. If moisture or dust gets into it, then it can jam, signal transmission may fail, and it can simply be stolen.

There are some additional accessories for wireless door locks, the use of which is optional, but convenient. For example, a camera, a motion sensor and an intercom.

DIY construction of a gate from a metal profile without welding

If you have no experience with welding and do not want to get acquainted with this process, then there is another option for building a wicket. To do this, you will need an electric drill, wrenches, hammer, tape measure and grinder. Fastening is carried out with bolted connections.

    1. As in the above case, the first step is to assemble the frame. Only now the pipes are not fixed to each other by welding, but with the help of fastening bolts, the cross-section of which is equal to eight millimeters. The 90 degree angle must be strictly observed. Cross pipes are also installed in the same way.
    2. Metal profile sheets are fixed with self-tapping screws.
    3. Then, depending on where the gate opens, hinge hinges are attached. It is better to attach them at the stage of collecting the "skeleton".

A metal profile wicket is a simple option for an entrance device. If you try, you can make it very attractive. The task of installing such a structure is within the power of every owner. The main difficulty of the process is working with welding. But it is quite possible to cope with it on your own. Good luck!
