Many strawberry varieties grown in our country are of foreign origin. However, among the Dutch varieties, only one fully took root - the Crown. Unlike most others, it has a high frost resistance, sufficient for growing in most of the territory of Russia, and is considered one of the best dessert varieties.
Strawberry Corona was bred in the Netherlands in 1972. The varieties Tamella and Induka were involved in obtaining it. Since the plants can withstand frosty winters, this strawberry has successfully taken root in our country, where it came in 1978.
In the literature, you can find mutually exclusive information about its remontability. Apparently, the whole point is in the climate of a particular region and in the correct observance of the technology.
The variety does not have continuous fruiting, the first begins at the end of June and lasts two to three weeks. But if the weather permits, you can harvest both the second and third crops during the season. Moreover, the possibility of year-round fruiting in greenhouse conditions or in a city apartment is indicated.
The bushes of this strawberry are of medium height, with wide leaves of a normal color. Whiskers give relatively little, but they may be enough for breeding. A small amount of mustache makes plantation maintenance easier. Peduncles are above average height, strong, withstand berries without falling to the ground.
There are berries even on young bushes, and they do not fall to the ground.
Berries of medium and above medium size, weighing from 12 to 30 g, heart-shaped, dark red, shiny. However, large berries are only at the very beginning, then they become very shallow, with poor care reaching very small ones, which the owner will be too lazy to collect. The pulp is orange-red, sweet, of excellent dessert taste, with a very slight sourness and a lot of juice. The aroma is strong, strawberry. The berries are firmly adhered to the stalks, sometimes to such an extent that it cannot be torn off without damage. It is because of the excellent taste of the berries that the variety does not lose its popularity, since for most of the other indicators it has long had very serious competitors.
The variety at the time of its appearance was distinguished by a relatively high yield: up to a kilogram of berries can be harvested from one bush per season. Under industrial conditions, the yield is estimated at 140 c / ha, but at present the variety is not grown on a large scale, it is widespread only on personal plots. In our time, such yields are not considered outstanding.
Strawberries can withstand frosts down to -20 aboutC, moderately resistant to fungal diseases, may be affected by gray mold and white spot.
The variety is undemanding to the composition of the soil, but it is not shade-tolerant, it bears fruit well only in open areas. Drought resistance is average, it does not tolerate waterlogging well. This requires the arrangement of drip irrigation systems, which are good at solving problems with soil moisture.
Since the Korona strawberries are very juicy and soft, they do not tolerate transportation well. Therefore, if a variety is grown for sale, then the harvest is sold only in a specific area. The shelf life of fresh berries is very short: within two days after harvest, they lose their presentation, and soon become unusable. Therefore, the variety is mainly used for domestic purposes. Berries do not tolerate freezing and turn into puree.
It is difficult to speak about the outstanding presentation of Korona strawberries. The fact is that it does not remain so for long, but freshly picked berries look quite elegant. Their shape and color are traditional for most varieties: after all, the heart-shaped berries of red and dark red are classics of the strawberry genre. However, even during picking, some berries can be damaged due to poor separation from the stalk, and with short storage, especially in a thick layer, the berries soften, thicken and lose their shape.
Marketable berries of the Crown have a classic shape and noble color
A special feature of the Crown strawberry is the wonderful dessert taste of berries.... This is what keeps the variety "afloat": after all, it has no other serious advantages over most modern varieties. However, if you distinguish between the words "advantages" and "dignity", then there are many advantages. It:
The obvious disadvantages of the variety are:
It is difficult to compare the Korona variety with modern varieties: it is not difficult to choose one that would be more rational in terms of the ratio of labor costs and the result obtained. The crown remains in the arsenal of many amateur gardeners solely due to the wonderful dessert taste of the berries. This is clearly an outdated variety, now it cannot be considered outstanding. Many summer residents who value their time are beginning to abandon it in favor of more versatile and productive varieties, albeit a little sacrificing the taste of berries.
It is difficult to talk about the versatility of Crown strawberries. Basically, it is customary to use them fresh, and in the very first day or two after harvest. They will make a delicious jam, but it will be ugly, since the berries in the jam will be indistinguishable, it is better to cook the jam right away. This strawberry will look bad in compotes too. You can put excess harvest on juice and even try to make wine from it, but for wine the variety lacks acidity, so it can only be used in blends. Sweet berries can be used to make liqueurs.
Gourmets can indulge in Corona berry liqueur
Unfortunately, attempting to defrost the frozen Crown Berries will result in a jail. If this does not bother you, then you can store them in the freezer until winter. However, while retaining almost all vitamins, they will lose some of their taste. Therefore, it is better to still eat these strawberries fresh: whole or in fruit salads.
Agrotechnology of the Crown strawberry is by no means supernatural, all the necessary measures are common, but they must be carried out in a timely manner and efficiently. In terms of cultivation, the variety is even convenient. In particular, the compactness of the bushes and a small number of mustaches allow for a dense planting: it is enough to leave 20–25 cm between the bushes. The variety does not require any unique soil, and even two dressings per season can be enough.
The easiest way to reproduce is to use a mustache, but you must immediately monitor their condition: after all, the Crown does not have an excess of mustache, so it is better to immediately identify the mother plants and take good care of them. Planting of rosettes is carried out as they take root, but by the beginning of September it should be completed.
Without a drip irrigation device, it is difficult to maintain the soil moisture required for the variety, but it cannot be allowed to dry out. In case of prolonged rains, cover the bed with a film. The variety feels bad in hot regions: it is better to plant bushes there in partial shade, although this will reduce the yield.
Growing a good crop is not easy without drip irrigation
At latitudes south of the Moscow region, the Crown does not require shelter for the winter, except for those cases when severe frosts come before a stable snow cover is established. In more northern regions, before the onset of winter, coniferous spruce branches are laid out on the beds, on top of which you can lay 1-2 layers of medium density spunbond.
Strawberry Crown is one of the best dessert varieties in terms of the taste of berries. However, it is used only in private farms, and even there it is gradually losing popularity, giving way to more productive modern varieties.
Strawberry Asia is an industrial variety, but in Russia it is often grown as an amateur crop. It bears fruit well in ordinary greenhouses, under a film, and in the south, judging by the reviews of summer residents, in the open field.
The description of the variety indicates low winter hardiness. This must be taken into account when landing in the Middle Lane. In Moscow and the region, the plant needs to be covered for the winter. For Siberia, the Urals, the North-West, cultivation in greenhouses is recommended.
As you can see in the photo, strawberry Asia forms a large shrub with large shiny leaves and long petioles. There are not so many of them, but the peduncles often do not grow to the height of the plates; with a thickened planting, there may be problems with the ripening of the crop.
Little whiskers are formed, strawberries are easier to care for, but for mass reproduction, horns have to be used - daughter rosettes formed at the base of the bush. Here their variety forms a sufficient number, and, according to gardeners, there is no shortage of planting material.
Garden strawberry Asia produces beautiful large fruits. In the characteristics indicated by the manufacturer when describing the variety, the average weight reaches 28-34 g. The shape is conical, with a slightly elongated nose, the color is red, the surface is shiny, there are no internal voids.
But in the photographs you can see strawberries both in the form of an elongated pyramid, and slightly flattened, comb-like. This is a feature of the variety - the first fruits are the largest, sometimes reaching 70 g, differ in shape.
During subsequent harvests, Asia is mostly one-dimensional, at the end of fruiting does not become shallow. It comes off easily from the stalk.
The flesh is firm like all commercial varieties, but does not feel firm or dry. The fruits of this strawberry are sweet and fragrant. The taste is rated at 4.6 points out of 5.
The variety is not remontant, in terms of ripening - medium early, the harvest is harvested over 3 weeks. There are no problems with pollination - at the same time as Asia, most varieties of strawberries bloom.
The yield from the bush is high, it differs greatly depending on the place where the strawberries are grown:
It is unlikely that it will be possible to get a kilogram or more of fruits from a plant in the garden, except to give the culture a "lethal" dose of fertilizers. So gardeners who have not managed to grow so many berries in the open field should not worry.
Strawberry Asia is an industrial variety according to its characteristics. Among the features of the group are high keeping quality and good transportability. Fruits can be eaten fresh, processed, frozen.
Strawberries of this variety are well suited for cultivation in continental climates. The bushes planted in garden beds take root well and grow in the south of the Russian Federation, in Ukraine, Belarus. If you try to grow it in other climatic conditions, then there are no guarantees of success.
In colder regions, the Alba variety should be grown in greenhouses with an additional heat source or in an apartment on a windowsill.
Important! When cultivating strawberries in a greenhouse, you need to maintain the air humidity at 70% and the ambient temperature at +25 degrees.
According to the reviews of summer residents, Alba forms a small number of mustaches. Therefore, the growth of plants and the capture of space does not pass quickly. The presence of large, brightly colored leaves promotes photosynthesis.
Peduncles are located at the same height with the leaves. Gardeners noticed that under the weight of the formed berries during the fruiting period, the flower stalks can lie on the ground. Alba's berries are large, the size of a matchbox, elongated-conical. The commercial value of the berries is that they are identical in size and shape.
One berry weighs an average of 30 g, the fruits of the first wave can reach a mass of 50 g. The surface of the berries with a gloss of intense red color. Achenes inside the fruit are colored yellow. The pulp is dense, juicy. When biting off, the berry does not crunch, it has a moderately pronounced aroma. Alba's taste is sweet, with a slight sourness. In the photo, you can admire the beauty and size of the berries of this variety.
If we consider the advantages and disadvantages of the variety, then the former significantly outweigh.
Some characteristics can be attributed to both the merits and the flaws of the variety.
|Characteristic||Possible disadvantage||Positive aspect|
|Average ripening period||Early production is most valuable||Allows you to get berries when most varieties have finished fruiting|
|Firm pulp||Insufficiently delicate consistency||Good transportability and keeping quality. The berry retains its shape, does not flow.|
|Lots of mustache||Creates additional difficulties in leaving||Reproduces easily. If a few bushes survived in the cold winter, there is no danger of losing the variety.|
|Extended collection||Additional labor costs||The ability to get berries for longer|
|Pronounced sourness||Disliked by lovers of sweet berries||High vitamin C content|
Care for Asia should be similar to caring for other varieties of strawberries:
Strawberry harvesting Zephyr begins early, in the second decade of June. The berries ripen almost simultaneously. They should be collected in the morning or evening hours. For transportation, the berries are best picked with fruit and put in shallow plastic containers. The berry is well tolerated.
Strawberries can be stored in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. Marshmallow tastes very good and, as foreign sources say, "is a good snack, but not good for jam." Berries are very good for freezing, do not lose their appearance and shape.

Guest, the article above lists the varieties with the best flavoring properties. Still, the taste does not depend on the country where the selection was carried out, but on which parents were taken for crossing, on the genetic inclinations of the plant. Good seedlings of garden strawberries and a large selection of varieties are available in the agrofirm "Poisk", in "SadKo" and other nurseries.
I would like to find our, Russian, varieties. Not very transportable, but very tasty. It is very difficult (almost impossible) to find our strawberries that bear fruit once, but how. How to protect yourself from remontant varieties when buying? All of these are Polish, Dutch - rubber. Large - yes, beautiful - yes. But what is in this beauty? You usually find these varieties in stores. Can you tell me where you can buy our strawberry seedlings?
We had the Mize Schindler variety for a very long time, the berry is not very large, dark in color and amazingly tasty, I want to renew it.
We have been growing the "Lord" strawberry variety for a long time. The berries are juicy, aromatic. Several years ago I wanted new berries. went to the garden center and bought seedlings: Vima Rimna, Ostara, Vima Keima, Queen Elizabeth, Honeois, Vicod. Sorry, maybe I didn't exactly name it. The seller, on Sannikov street, praised this good to me very much. To my disappointment, instead of fragrant strawberries, just strawberry meat grew - giant berries, without aroma, which bloomed even in autumn. I did not regret the money spent and threw everything away. Let it be "Lord" than such nonsense. apparently the breeders chased after the gigantism of berries, but the consumers forgot about us. Now I read about the proposed varieties and even foreign names are very embarrassing - I can't believe that the berries will delight, I definitely won't buy them. I'd rather buy them in the market, from an old woman, that's more accurate.
