What can be planted in open ground at the very end of April

April is the best time to plant cold-resistant plants in open ground. The crops sown this month are stronger, hardened and adapted to their natural environment. The following vegetables are suitable for April sowing.

For cauliflower, it is important to choose a sheltered and well-lit area with fertile soil. The most suitable predecessors are cucumber, root vegetables, onions, legumes.

Sowing time for cauliflower can fall on any ten-day period of April. The main thing is to avoid the threat of frost. But for a few days it is still worth covering the beds with foil or spunbond.

The holes are made up to 10 cm deep, and the distance between them is 40 cm.A small amount of humus can be placed on the bottom.

The plant responds positively to top dressing, so it is better to fertilize 3-4 times per season. The crop is harvested in mid-August, when the cauliflower heads reach 8 cm in diameter.

Early varieties of white cabbage

Early ripe white cabbage begins to be planted in open ground from the end of April and continues until the beginning of June. The landing date is calculated depending on the climatic characteristics of the region. In this case, it is taken into account that the cycle of full development of seedlings is 30-45 days.

Also in April, you can sow cabbage seeds directly into open ground and cover with foil. The beds should be located in a well-lit place, protected from drafts. This culture needs a long day of light.

After sowing, the wells are watered abundantly, because moisture plays an important role in seed germination. Then the cabbage is watered every 5-7 days. Top dressing begins 2 weeks after the first shoots appear.

Early pumpkin varieties

An ideal place for pumpkins is where cabbage, potatoes, root vegetables, legumes, and onions grew in the past year. It is also important to choose a sunny place for growing.

The optimal time for planting a pumpkin is determined by the seedlings themselves. 2-3 well-developed leaves should appear on them, and the seedlings should be 15-22 cm high.

It is important that the threat of recurrent night frosts passes, and the outside air and soil warms up to + 13-15 ℃. The holes are placed at a distance of 1 meter from each other, because over time, the pumpkin grows strongly.

Pumpkin prefers regular and abundant watering, especially during flowering and fruit formation. Ripening of early varieties takes 90-120 days. The crop is usually harvested in August.

Carrots grow well on sandy loam and light loamy soils. The most successful prior crops are potatoes, legumes, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and herbs. It is worth returning carrots to their original place only after 4-5 years.

For an early harvest, it is best to sow the seeds at the end of April. The soil is thoroughly dug up, lightly tamped, grooves are made, observing the distance between them 15-20 cm.

Carrot seeds are sown to a depth of 2-3 cm, between which a distance of 3-7 cm is maintained. Seedlings appear after 20 days. To speed up the process of culture development, experienced gardeners recommend covering the beds with foil.

Parsnips grow well in fertile soil with a wide humus layer. Then the root crop will develop rapidly and receive many useful substances.

It is desirable that cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions grow there last season. Correct crop rotation protects the plant from typical diseases.

For sowing, it is better to wait until the soil temperature is + 10-12 ℃. Parsnip seeds have a low germination rate, so they should be planted 3-4 cm apart.

It develops slowly - it takes about 150 days from sowing to ripening. It is especially important to regularly water the plantings, otherwise the roots will begin to crack.

For growing turnips, a site with light loamy soil is suitable. It's good if last year it grew cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes or legumes.

Sowing turnip in spring will allow harvesting in summer. Re-sowing is carried out in June to obtain root crops that are stored throughout the winter.

The seeds are planted in holes 1-2 cm deep, a distance of 20 cm is observed between the rows. The soil is carefully compacted, watered and mulched with humus.

The first seedlings of the culture can be seen as early as 5-6 days after sowing. After 14 days, it is important to thin out the shoots so that there is a gap of 10-12 cm between them.

Spring garlic

This culture grows well on black earth and loamy soils. Spring sowing of chives is carried out after the soil has warmed up to +4 -7 ℃. Depending on the region, this is April or May.

The beds should be located in an open, ventilated and lighted area; in shaded areas it is almost impossible to get a harvest of large heads. It is good if the predecessors are zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage, legumes.

An important stage in preparing garlic for spring planting is vernalization. For this, the heads are kept for 1.5 months at a temperature of + 3 ℃. Planting material with such preparation quickly takes root and gives a rich harvest, which is harvested in late summer or early autumn.

The main thing is not to deepen the cloves, but to leave 2-3 cm from the top. Otherwise, ripening will be late.

What to plant in April in open ground

Radish and radish. For planting these early crops, it will be enough if the soil warms up to +2 degrees. These vegetables are planted several times during the spring and summer, starting in mid to late April. The next beds of radish and radish will need to be planted when grown shoots appear on the previous ones.

Sorrel, dill, lettuce and celery. These unpretentious types of salad greens are not afraid of spring temperature drops. Therefore, as soon as the soil on the site reaches a temperature of +4 degrees, you can safely sow their seeds or seedlings in the ground.

Carrots and potatoes. It is customary to plant these roots in late April-early May, when the earth will gain more heat (+ 5-8 degrees). For planting carrots and potatoes, it is better to choose sunny, open areas, since vegetables need warmth and sunlight.

Also in April, you can safely plant beans, peas, parsnips, rhubarb, spinach, seeds of seedless cabbage, berry bushes and fruit trees in the ground, provided that the soil is warmed up enough.

What vegetables and when to sow in April

Sowing seedlings

Tomato and physalis. Tomato varieties are chosen for planting in open ground beds.

Cabbage. For long-term storage, white cabbage of late ripening varieties is sown. If possible, it is better to grow seedlings in a greenhouse, in order to avoid stretching.

Lovers of Savoy, cauliflower also sow seedlings. Brussels sprouts can be sown in early April, but not later. You should take into account the long period of development of the "Brussels", otherwise it will not have time to give a good harvest.

White cabbage for pickling and short-term storage, as well as cauliflower (for conveyor products), broccoli, kohlrabi and Peking cabbage are sown for seedlings in the second half of April. Peking cabbage seedlings are preferable to grow with the preservation of an earthen coma, since it does not like root trauma.

Basil. Grown through seedlings for early production and their seeds.

Spring work in the garden and vegetable garden

Sow seeds for seedlings. In early March, you can sow mid-season and early varieties of peppers and eggplants. They do not like transplanting, so it is better to sow seeds immediately in separate cups.

At the end of March, late and mid-season tomato varieties can be sown. On the contrary, they love transplanting and picking, so they can be sown in boxes or containers.

Also in March, you can safely sow flowers on seedlings - annual asters, verbena, delphiniums, gatsania, Chinese carnation, gelichrizum, levkoy, lobelia, snapdragon, petunia, sage, scented tobacco.

Prune fruit trees and berry bushes. In March, you can carry out any type of pruning - sanitary, shaping, rejuvenating. It is better to do this in the first half of the month, so that the wounds have time to heal before the start of sap flow.

Put dahlia tubers on germination. At the end of May, they can be planted in a flower garden, and they will bloom much earlier than if they were planted immediately in open ground. In addition, you can cut and root green dahlia cuttings and thus get more planting material.

Prepare your greenhouse for the upcoming season. Here is a list of works that are important to do before you start to populate plants in the greenhouse:

  • check the strength of the structure - perhaps the nuts have loosened somewhere if the metal structures are rusted, they need to be cleaned and painted
  • wash the windows - this will increase the illumination inside the greenhouse by 30%
  • disinfect the soil - pour it with Bordeaux liquid or copper sulfate according to the instructions
  • apply fertilizer to the soil - preferably humus or compost
  • warm the beds - cover them with black film or pour hot water over them.

Plant fruit trees. In April, trees can be grafted in any way. And in order for the grafts to take root, it is important to observe the main condition: the stock (the plant to which they are grafted) must be active, with swollen buds, and the scion (the stalk which is grafted) must be dormant.

Treat trees and shrubs from diseases and pests. In the spring, you need to carry out 3 sprays:

Before bud break - Bordeaux liquid or HOM preparation. This will eliminate the causative agents of most diseases.

When the first leaves appear - the drug Fufanon. This treatment is only for berry bushes - it will help kill mites.

When the buds appear - the drug Fufanon. This time, you need to spray both trees and shrubs - this treatment will get rid of most pests.

Feed the garden. In spring, plants begin to grow actively, so they need nitrogen.

Apple and pear - in the last days of April: 3 cups of urea - scatter over the diameter of the crown and water.

Currant - at the beginning of bud break: 2 tbsp. tablespoons of ammonium nitrate per 10 liters of water. The norm is 1 bucket per bush.

Gooseberry - when the leaves begin to bloom: 2 tbsp. tablespoons of nitrophoska and 1 tbsp. spoon of urea in 10 liters of water. The norm is 2 buckets per bush.

Raspberries - in mid-April: 3 tbsp. tablespoons of urea per 1 sq. m. Dismantle in the aisles and close it into the ground with a rake.

Plant seedlings. Mid-April is an ideal time for planting absolutely any trees and shrubs: both fruit and berry, and ornamental.

Sow cold-resistant plants. At the end of April, you can sow:

  • vegetables - carrots, beets, peas, beans, lentils, rutabagas and turnips, borage, mustard, all types of cabbage, all types of onions, watercress, radishes, turnips, parsnips, rhubarb, arugula, lettuce, spinach, sorrel

  • spicy herbs - anise, hyssop, cilantro, catnip, lofant, lovage, monardo, mint, parsley, dill, celery, thyme, cumin, fennel

  • flowers - aquilegia, amaranth, anagalis, aster, cosmea, lychnis, lupine, foxglove, calendula.

Sow vegetables on seedlings. In early April - early varieties of tomatoes. At the end of the month - cucumbers, watermelons, melons, pumpkins, squash and squash, lagenarii, late varieties of corn.

Plant seedlings in greenhouses. In April, you can safely plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and cucumbers in greenhouses.

Get the potato tubers for germination. This must be done two weeks before planting - in mid-April. Tubers should be germinated in a cool but bright room.

Uncover roses, clematis and grapes. The shelters must be removed gradually - first, for several days in a row, they should be opened only for a day, and then, when the plants get used to it, the protection can be removed completely.

What and when to start planting at home

You can start planting seedlings at home in March. But here it is necessary to focus on the time of seed germination, which depends on the type of crops (early maturing or not), conditions in the house and the quality of care. All this can be found on the packaging for the plant.

When planting seedlings, you can focus on the following table:

Culture nameWhen to plant seedlingsHow many shoots will appearWhen to transplant to the beds
Early ripening tomatoesAfter March 20In about a weekIn mid-June
Late tomatoesAfter March 105-6 dayIn mid-June
Bell pepperAfter March 10In two weeksIn mid-June
