Rhodiola is one of the plants used in phytotherapy that boasts the broadest spectrum of beneficial effects on humans. Not only used to act on the body, it is also a valid mood regulator and useful in cases of anxiety or depression. It is a plant native to Tibet and Siberia, but now naturalized also on the rocky areas of Northern Europe and the Alps. Although it is not a particularly decorative plant, it can boast good diffusion especially thanks to its phytotherapeutic properties. It is a shrub that can reach up to 70 cm in height and has characteristic yellow flowers with many and very small petals. To make it even more particular contributes a characteristic scent very similar to that of the rose. As with many plants used in phytotherapy, some parts that contain a greater quantity of active ingredients are recognized and used: among these, the flowers and rhizomes. The intake of rhodiola or plant extracts does not present particular contraindications unless the recommended dosages are exceeded: too high dosages can in fact lead to disorders related to the digestive and circulatory system, but also to states of anxiety, insomnia , restlessness. Among the beneficial influences found in rhodiola there is certainly the influence on the circulatory system and on the heart, but also that on the fat mass of the body: the intake of rhodiola, combined with a correct diet and adequate motor activity, favors the weight reduction of fat mass in favor of the development of lean mass.

Active ingredients and beneficial effects

As we have seen, rhodiola can bring various benefits to the human body. Among the main effects that can be found following the intake of active ingredients extracted from rhodiola, there is a beneficial action on the heart, which similarly also influences the reduction of anxiety and stress. For this reason, rhodiola can counteract or at least alleviate the symptoms related to anxiety or depressive states. Furthermore, the intake of rhodiola in case of depressive states can also favor the control of compulsive hunger, favoring the correct development of the organism and counteracting the negative effects of eating disorders. All this is due not only to the substances contained in rhodiola, but also to their effect on serotonin, which is more easily transported from the brain to the blood and vice versa. In general, rhodiola is considered an excellent adaptogen, therefore able to regulate and normalize the functions of the body. This also applies to erectile disorders and related to secondary amenorrhea.

Despite the vast and varied benefits that rhodiola is able to bring to the human body, and despite the fact that the products based on its active ingredients are on the increase, the cultivation of rhodiola is not yet particularly widespread in Italy, especially if you think about that on a large scale. This is because the climatic conditions required by the plant to survive are not very similar to those offered by most of the territories of our country. The rodiola in fact needs very cold climates to grow and rocky soils. The ideal areas are therefore those of high mountains, where however it is not easy to give life to large crops. Rhodiola does not adapt to particularly hot climates and can hardly tolerate drought. Despite this it is possible to provide for the cultivation, or at least the attempt, of some seedling for domestic use. In this case it is good to prepare the soil carefully before sowing, in autumn or early spring. The soil must be mixed with sand with gravel or perlite and watering must be carried out periodically. Cultivation is carried out by cuttings from the roots of the plant already present, or by sowing, taking care to keep the seeds first in cold water and then in damp sand for about 30 days, providing only subsequently for laying in the growth substrate, where the seedling must be kept until it reaches about 15 cm, and then, finally, be placed in the ground already prepared.

Rodiola: Products on the market

With the rhizomes and the flowers of the rhodiola it is possible to create herbal teas and decoctions or infusions to promote blood circulation, reduce stress, fight anxiety and insomnia. However, attention should be paid to the indications related to the daily quantity, which should not exceed 600 mg, as overdose could cause various side effects, including anxiety disorders and insomnia. Rhodiola extracts are also the basis of products designed to improve mood, depressive states, blood circulation, regulate the heartbeat and even in targeted therapies for weight control, as well as disorders related to compulsive hunger, which rodiola is able to reduce.

Medicinal properties of Rhodiola rosea

In addition to being considered a natural antibiotic, rhodiola rosea is known to have effects on serotonin. So, at least on paper, it should improve depressive states, mental and cardiovascular activity and even help lose weight.

Several species of rhodiola appear to have antibiotic and antibacterial properties. There have been several scientific studies on the medicinal properties of Rhodiola rosea and they generally confirm that it is a useful plant for treating various medical conditions. Especially with regards to its effect on serotonin production. In any case, if you suffer from chronic depression or insomnia, see a doctor before treating yourself.

The plant is also seen as a potential aid in cases of hepatitis C and cancer, but more studies are still needed.

There are people who buy the herb and use it in the kitchen but generally it is bought in capsules or as a tonic. Instructions will be found in the package and no serious side effects are known. Since it is a herb that tends to keep you awake, it is not recommended to take it in the evening before going to sleep.

Research conducted at the Medical College of Bhavnagar in India and published in the journal "Phytotherapy Research" found that turmeric is able to treat depression better than Prozac. The team from the Pharmacology department wanted to compare the effects, but also the safety, of a turmeric extract (1000 mg) and Prozac (fluoxetine 20 mg) used together and individually for 6 weeks on 60 patients diagnosed with MDD, or major depressive disorder. We are obviously talking about high doses of curcumin (to be taken as a supplement) and not of a food consumption of the spice.

Rhodiola rosea is a succulent plant typical of Siberia. The cold and very harsh climate of this region induces the plant to develop secondary metabolites that allow it to survive by adapting to the adverse environment. Thanks to these active ingredients, the plant extract has a high adaptogenic power, that is, it induces a better adaptation and therefore a resistance of the organism to any form of stress, while providing many other benefits.

The gradual and physiological action of Rhodiola helps reduce the impact of various stress factors, external and internal, on the nervous system. In this sense, Rhodiola rosea has given positive responses against mood alterations and sleep disorders.

Not only does it prove useful for reducing recovery times following strenuous physical activity, but it can also be a valid support in diets aimed at weight control, as it is believed to act with a dampening effect on the stimulation of nervous hunger. The raw material used in Natural Point Rhodiola rosea is originally from Siberia. It does not contain excipients and allergens.

Advice for use: Take 2 to 3 capsules a day, accompanied by a generous sip of water or a warm herbal tea. Take preferably during the first hours of the day.

Ingredients: Rhodiola root dry extract (Rodiola rosea) 3% rosavin, vegetable capsule (Hydroxy-propyl-methylcellulose)
