7 ideas on how to save a watermelon for the New Year

Serving a watermelon to the New Year's table is a very unusual idea that will undoubtedly surprise guests and delight loved ones. However, keeping it juicy and tasty for several months is not an easy task, because without special conditions it will simply start to rot. Suitable for storage fruit without external damage, with a thick skin and weighing about 4-5 kg.

We keep the watermelon hanging

One of the easiest ways to store a watermelon is to hang it in the pantry of an apartment or in the basement of a private house.

You need to do the following:

  1. Wrap the watermelon with a natural cloth.
  2. Put in a mesh bag.
  3. Hang on a hook so that the fruit does not come into contact with other objects, including the wall.

Putting the watermelon in the straw

Straw picks up moisture well and dries quickly, so the watermelon will not rot for a long time under it.

Store the watermelon correctly as follows:

  1. Prepare a wooden box and cover the bottom with a thick layer of straw.
  2. Lay the watermelon with the stem up.
  3. Cover with straw so that it is completely covered.

If there are several watermelons, then a layer of straw should also be laid between them, since they should not touch each other.

We store watermelons in sand or grain until winter

For this storage method, only a cool, dry room is suitable, in which you need to do the following:

  1. Put a wooden box and cover it with half-dried sand, which must first be calcined in an oven or oven to kill harmful microorganisms.
  2. Lay the watermelon with the stem down.
  3. Cover it completely with sand, and if there are several fruits, then there should also be a layer of sand between them, as is the case with straw.

In grain, watermelons are stored much better and longer, but they are not cheap, so they are usually replaced with sand.

Store watermelon in cold water

Also, a watermelon will retain its freshness for a long time if it is placed in cold water. For this, a barrel standing on the street in cold weather is suitable, as well as an ice hole, but only if it is in the garden, otherwise the fruit may be stolen. During storage, the fruit should be covered with cold water to the top, and the water in the barrel should be changed every week so that it does not stagnate.

Before immersion in water, a watermelon should be inspected for damage, since even with a small crack, it will quickly begin to rot.

Store watermelon in wood ash

Ash absorbs moisture well, and also prevents the growth of fungi and bacteria, therefore it is ideal for storing various fruits. If a stove or fireplace is regularly heated in a private house, then there will be enough ash to store the watermelon in it.

The process looks something like the case with sand:

  1. Dry and sift the ash.
  2. Sprinkle it in a thick layer on the bottom of the wooden box.
  3. Place the watermelon and cover with ash.
  4. Cover the box with a lid and store it in the cellar or basement.

We store watermelons in clay

Clay does not allow water and air to pass through, therefore it has long been known as a means for long-term storage of fruits.

If you want to store watermelon in clay, you need to do the following:

  1. Add water to a dried piece of clay and knead it, achieving a pasty mass.
  2. Coat the watermelon with a layer of clay, leave to dry, and then apply a few more layers. As a result, the thickness of the clay layer should be at least 5 mm.
  3. Wait until the mixture is completely dry, and then carefully put it on a shelf or in a box.

We store watermelon in wax or paraffin

As with clay, you need to prepare a mixture from paraffin or wax and cover the watermelon with it.

The actions are as follows:

  1. Melt paraffin or wax.
  2. Cover the fruit with several layers of the mixture until the shell is 1 cm thick.
  3. After the mass has solidified, the watermelon must be transferred to a cool place.

Based on the number of effective ways of storing watermelon, it is clear that it will be able to please the family not only in hot summer, but also on a winter evening on New Year's Eve. The main thing is not to be lazy and put the fruit well for storage, so that instead of juicy pulp you do not get rotten pulp.

The following options are suitable for the case:

  • "Striped" (fruits are dark green, have distinct stripes)
  • "Astrakhansky" (spherical shape of berries, dense pulp)
  • "Gift of the sun" (successfully grown in Siberia, the fruits are strong, small in size)
  • "Volzhsky" (thick-skinned melon of dark green color)
  • "Popovka" (distinguished by large seeds)
  • "Chill" (spherical berries with scarlet pulp).

Practice shows that mid-season crop varieties are unsuitable for long-term storage. Despite the apparent strength, they quickly deteriorate.

Japanese breeders have developed the only watermelon in the world with a black rind.

Modern solutions for crop storage

Today there are solutions that allow you to store crops without a cellar and the construction of temporary earthen shelters: right in your apartment. There are lari-cellars on sale, in which the necessary conditions are created. There are options for cold rooms (for example, for installation on a balcony or in an unheated country house): the heater will prevent vegetables from freezing. And vice versa - for warm ones, when the cellar is installed in the apartment, and the cooler maintains the desired temperature.

At their core, these are simple devices. The simplest heating cabinet can be built on the balcony yourself, using modern building thermal insulation materials. And if electronics is not a Chinese primer for you, then adding the necessary sensors and other elements to your homemade design will not be a big problem either.

Storage methods

Having decided on the place, you need to choose a way to store the watermelon:

Methods for storing watermelons

We tried to pick up a variety so that you can choose the one that suits you best.

Method 1: hanging

In this way, you can store a watermelon both in a private house (in the basement, pantry) and in an apartment (in the closet). To do this, the watermelon is wrapped in a dense natural cloth so that it completely covers it, the fruit is placed in a string bag, and hung on a hook. The fruit should not touch any surface (wall, cabinet, shelf, etc.).

Method 2: in the straw

You can keep the "sun berry" in the straw for a long period of time.

You can keep the watermelon in the straw for a long period of time.

For this, the bottom of the box or shelves are covered with a thick layer of straw. On it, at some distance from each other, watermelons are carefully placed with the stalk up. Straw "partitions" are laid between the fruits, added on top of the watermelons so that the straw completely covers the fruits.

Method 3: in the sand

This method is also suitable for storage in an apartment or private house.

  1. Place the wooden box in a cool room and fill it about halfway with dry sand.
  2. A watermelon is laid on the sand with the stalk down (or several, but only in such a way that they do not touch each other). Then the fruits are carefully covered with dry sand, carefully observing that the sand covers them completely.

Advice: Sand is an excellent substitute for dry grain. The fact is that it is in dry cereal seeds that watermelons can be stored for a long period of time.

In addition to the usual, there are several more intricate and even exotic. If you have a desire, free time, a suitable room, and most importantly - a ripe watermelon, then why not try to preserve the "sunny berry" using one of the original methods?

Method 4: in water

The main condition for such storage is that the water must be cold and completely cover the watermelon: you can lower it into an ice hole or store it in the basement - in a barrel or wooden vat filled with water.

Method 5: in ash

If you heat the stove (fireplace) with wood or there is simply an opportunity to get ash, you can store watermelons in it too: ash will prevent the development of fungi and putrefactive bacteria, absorb excess moisture, which will keep the fruits for a long period of time. The wooden box is filled with a thick layer of dry, sieved ash. A watermelon is carefully laid on it, which is completely covered with ash. The box is closed with a lid and left for storage in the cellar or basement.

Method 6: in clay

With the help of clay, you can save many foods from spoilage, so why not try saving a watermelon?

With the help of clay, you can save many foods from spoilage.

Clay is diluted with water to a pasty consistency, applied to a watermelon. As soon as the clay dries, the berry is coated several more times, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly. As a result, a layer about 0.5 cm thick should turn out on the watermelon. The clay coating is allowed to dry again, and the watermelon is stored in a cool dark room by hanging it in a string bag or laying it on a litter of sawdust.

Method 7: in paraffin

In the same way as in clay, watermelon can be stored in wax or paraffin.
Melt paraffin or wax and cover the berry with it several times. As a result, the coating layer should be about 1 cm thick. Store the watermelon covered with wax or paraffin in a cool place.

In clay

To use clay for storage, you should:

  1. Dilute it with water so that you get a gruel.
  2. Coat the watermelons with the mixture. Application should take place several times, but each previous layer should be dry.
  3. The clay layer on the watermelon should be up to 0.5-1 cm.
  4. Then remove the fruit to a cool, dark place.

Turn fruit periodically and check for integrity. Remember not to put them on a hard surface during storage, as this contributes to the appearance of softness and sluggishness on the inside. If you follow all the instructions, then the shelf life of watermelons can be 3-4 months.

Many people buy watermelons for the New Year's table at a high price and with low quality. But why do this if you can save money and stock up on summer heat and vitamins for the winter, leaving the most useful berry for storage.
